IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people are of the view that students should study some courses that are not relevant to their field while others argue that student should pay all their attention to their course specific subjects so that they can get a better understanding of studies. I agree that the motive of a student should be to focus on his field, but they should also get a chance to learn some other courses which can be help them in their personal development and boost their career.

Some students are interested in learning courses that are not relevant to their field because they want to get some extra skills that can be utilized in their future, for example a computer science student whose studies are solely related to IT will not fully develop his interpersonal skills that can eventually help him socializing and getting a job once his degree is completed. On the other hand, student who has good communication skills, can get that job in his place, this is a reason why students should learn some extra skills in parallel with their course specific studies.

While some people think that students should not take these extra courses and spend all their energy on qualification inorder to get a good skillset so that they enter easily in coorperate environment, also by achieving good grades can help them in getting good scholarships and admissions in well reputed universities abroad, where they can make their future bright, for example a student who has good skillset with his degree is likely to get more priority over a student who has the same degree with no skillset, As a result student with skillset will get more job opportunities.

I am of the view that students should prioritize their course specific study, but they should also learn some other courses that can help them develop good interpersonal skills such as sales, business and communication skills. A good skillset with extra interpersonal can make a student shine in every field.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a consistent position: students should prioritise their main subject while also having opportunities to study other areas. The examples about communication skills helping a computer science graduate and grades supporting scholarships are relevant to the discussion. This meets the task well overall, but the two sides are not developed equally clearly. The benefits of additional subjects are explained through interpersonal skills, whereas the argument for concentrating on a qualification shifts between grades, scholarships and employment without fully explaining how these support the opposing view. Your conclusion restates your position, but could draw together the main reasons more explicitly. To strengthen the response further, explain each side’s central benefit and connect each example directly to it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. The progression from the first argument to the contrasting view is easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “As a result” help signal relationships. However, some linking is mechanical, and the second body paragraph contains several ideas joined into one long sentence, making the relationship between qualification, grades, scholarships and jobs less clear. References such as “that job in his place” are also difficult to interpret. Use shorter sentences to separate supporting points, and make pronouns and references explicit. These changes would make the organisation more consistently smooth and the connections between ideas clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “interpersonal skills,” “qualification,” “scholarships” and “job opportunities,” and your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “course specific studies,” though this is not a natural collocation. Some word choices and spelling errors reduce precision: “inorder,” “coorperate,” and “well reputed” should be corrected, while “extra interpersonal” is incomplete and unclear. Repetition of “skillset” and “course” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural academic collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, use “transferable skills” or “specialist studies” where appropriate. Proofreading spelling and word forms would improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a computer science student whose studies are solely related to IT” and a contrast introduced by “While.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “student should pay” needs an article or plural subject, and “which can be help them” has an incorrect verb construction. The sentence beginning “While some people think” is also overloaded and lacks a clear main structure; the comma after “skills” in “student who has good communication skills, can get” is unnecessary. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles and verb patterns, and divide long sentences so complex structures remain controlled.
