Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I agree that learning different subjects with continuing the main subject gives more skills and knowledge and its also improve your growth and development in your career life.it is okay to give more attention on main subjects to qualify with good grade but being a qualified without having extra skill may poor your profile .

We can learn different subject in holidays or in leisure time so that it dosen't affect on our main subjects and also make your profile strong

when i was doing my bachelors i took french classes to make my profile strong so that it will help in my career and learning a french langauges gives more opportunities around the world and easy to get a good jobs in top companies with good package. so i am not telling that by learning language can make your career easy,we have to balance both main subject and extra subject and that leads to you successful life

I will tell you how i used to balance my university classes and french classes

i have attend university classes 3 days in a week and 2 days i attend french classes and then saturday and sunday i used to take rest or enjoy with my family or else i usually go on small trips with my friends

this is how i used to balance my academic, extra learning and entertainment in my daily life

A person should have relax to his mind and body also then only he can learn the things and achieve the goals

Hence i prefer that Having and extra knowldge and skills give you more opportunity and make you successfull person

These are only the days we can learn extra subjects after completion of main subject and get qualified we cannot give time to learn different subjects

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear preference for learning additional subjects, and the French-class example from your bachelor’s studies is relevant and personal. You also acknowledge the opposing view by noting that students need to focus on their main subjects to gain a qualification. However, the discussion is only partial: the qualification-focused view is mentioned briefly rather than explained, and the benefits and drawbacks of each approach are not developed in a balanced way. Your opinion is present, but it shifts between supporting extra learning and saying students can learn other subjects only after completing their main studies. Explain both views more fully, then state a consistent position and support it with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable sequence: you state your preference, describe your French classes, and conclude with a recommendation. The personal example helps connect your opinion to your experience. However, ideas are often joined in long, loosely connected passages, and paragraphing does not clearly separate the two views from your example and conclusion. Connectors such as “and,” “so that,” and “hence” are repeated or do not always show the precise relationship between ideas. The final sentence also seems to conflict with your earlier support for learning extra subjects alongside a degree. Use distinct paragraphs for each view, your opinion, and the example, and make each paragraph develop one main point with clear links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “qualification,” “profile,” “opportunities,” and “balance,” and the French-language example gives you a way to discuss career benefits. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. For example, “poor your profile” and “good package” do not express your intended ideas naturally; “extra knowledge” is also repeated rather than varied. Spelling errors such as “dosen't,” “langauges,” and “knowldge” further reduce accuracy. Build a bank of natural academic phrases for discussing skills, qualifications, and career prospects, and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to express reasons and relationships using clauses with “so that,” “when,” and “because,” and you include both simple and longer sentences. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors in verb forms and agreement appear in phrases such as “it also improve,” “i have attend,” and “a person should have relax”; articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent. For instance, the opening runs several ideas together, while “I will tell you how…” is not followed by a clearly controlled sentence structure. These errors can make the reader pause to interpret your meaning. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine them using subordinate clauses, checking tense, agreement, articles, and punctuation.
