IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
One group of university students nowadays are eager to study other topics along with their main topics. Whereas, another group of university students argue that it is necessary to provide their full time and attention to studying for a single qualification. From my perspective, if some one is interested and motivated in some other topics besides his regular topics, he should parallely study for that topic too.
Generally, people study for only one topic throughout the life and also, works in this field. But nowadays, world has changed. People need to have knowledge about several things to sustain in this competetive world. For example, an engineering student could be interested in doing business with his engineering background for example, starting a farm. If he starts to learn about business related topics parallely, he will be able to compete other people who are knowledgable with only one topic that is either engineering or business in future. Moreover, Knowing different topics give the students different options for the future so that he can choose one of those.
On contrary to that, learning different topics along with the mail topic can be very tiring. Student needs to manage time for the both of the topics and also needs to work more hardly. There is a possibility of being stressed out and demotivated managing these. As a result, students could end up not learning any of the topic properly.
To conclude, learning different subjects in addition to the main subjects can be a great investment for a student. But, that is only when, they are motivated enough to study anothe subject and able to manage the pressure. In my opinion, a student should learn multiple topics but only when he is motivated enough to learn the things by managing pressure.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a consistent opinion: you support studying additional subjects when a student is motivated and can manage the pressure. The engineering student who learns business provides a relevant example, and the final paragraph acknowledges the possible cost of divided attention. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The benefits of broader knowledge and future options are explained, while the argument for concentrating on one qualification is mainly limited to tiredness, stress, and the risk of learning neither subject well. Develop this view with a specific reason, such as the depth of expertise required for a professional qualification, and explain your example more precisely. This would make the discussion more fully supported and balanced.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “For example,” “Moreover,” and “To conclude” help the reader follow the argument. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, however: “Whereas” begins a sentence fragment, and “On contrary to that” is not a natural transition. The example also repeats “for example” in close succession, interrupting the flow. In places, references such as “these” in “managing these” are not fully clear. Use complete contrast sentences, vary transitions, and make pronoun references explicit to improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “qualification,” “motivated,” “compete,” and “demotivated,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There is some attempt to express more specific ideas, such as “sustain in this competitive world,” but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural. Examples include “main topics” for university subjects, “work more hardly,” “different options for the future,” and “learn the things.” Spelling errors such as “competetive,” “knowledgable,” and “parallely” also reduce accuracy. These issues keep the range from sounding consistently natural and precise. Build a bank of common academic collocations and check spelling and word forms during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional forms such as “If he starts to learn about business-related topics… he will be able to compete,” and a concession in the conclusion. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “One group … are” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “Generally, people study … and also, works” shifts incorrectly from plural to singular. Articles and sentence construction are also inconsistent in “world has changed” and “Whereas, another group … argue.” The final sentence, “only when he is motivated enough … and able to manage,” would be clearer with parallel phrasing. Review agreement, articles, and complete sentence structures while retaining your attempts at complex forms.
