IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Many student belief that studying more subjects will be beneficial for them, but in contrast other thinks its better to study only relevant subject for better grades in exams.
Both opinions have logic and importance. In view of studying more subjects give us knowledge about different fields and sectors of life. Sometimes it disturb our academic life. Many students felt burden of their studies due to more number of subjects which distract them from their study or leave it. Studying only one subject also have pros and cons. In positive view, focus only on main subject is easier than all subjects. It may helps student to get better marks in their exams as compared to its opposite side. As a result, they may get better job and they are the legend of their field. In negative view, those students who read only their main subject have little knowledge about other subject except of their main subject. Other subject may also give knowledge which will be essential in different area of life.
In my prespective, I think studying more subjects will be better than only focus on relevant subject. A person will handle theri daily life hurdles on the basis of his knowledge and his hurdles not only from one subject or field. Problems came from everypart or sector of life. For solving that problems, Awareness of different subjects will helpul. For instance, I have read only computer in my matric and have good learning of it, but in comparison my friend read both computer and biology in matric. We experienced with a situation where a person needs First-aid. He asked for help from us. I cant do anything. On the other hand, my friend help him. After that incident, I also belief education of more subject is helpul

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear personal preference for studying additional subjects. The discussion of focused study includes a relevant benefit—better exam results and potentially stronger career prospects—while you also recognise that broader study can provide useful knowledge. Your first-aid example supports your opinion and makes the argument more personal. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally: the advantages of studying a wider range of subjects are stated generally, and the example mainly illustrates practical knowledge rather than explaining how it complements a university qualification. To strengthen the response further, explain each view in more depth and connect your example more explicitly to university students and their studies. The position is clear, though the supporting reasoning is not consistently extended.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: it introduces the debate, considers both positions, and then presents your opinion with an example. Phrases such as “In positive view,” “In negative view,” and “For instance” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes abrupt, and some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “As a result” introduces job prospects without fully explaining the connection, while “In view of studying more subjects” is difficult to follow as a transition. The final example also moves quickly from your school subjects to a first-aid situation. Use clearer topic sentences and explain how each supporting point follows from the previous one; this would make the argument flow more smoothly and references easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “qualification,” “academic life,” “knowledge,” and “first-aid.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “different fields and sectors of life.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the meaning less natural: “the legend of their field” does not express the intended idea, and “more number of subjects” is awkward. Spelling and word-form errors such as “prespective,” “helpul,” and “belief” also reduce precision. Build a more reliable range of phrases for discussing education and its outcomes, and check whether each expression is idiomatic in context. More accurate collocations would make your ideas clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including conditional reasoning and relative clauses, as in “those students who read only their main subject…” This gives the response some structural variety. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur throughout and can make parts difficult to read. Examples include “Many student belief,” “other thinks,” “It may helps,” and “Problems came from everypart.” The first-aid example also shifts between past and present forms, as in “I cant do anything” and “my friend help him.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement and keeping verb tense consistent, especially when recounting a past event. Shorter, accurately controlled sentences would also help you express the more complex points clearly.
