IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some university students show interest in learning other subjects along with their majors, while others argue that the focus should be on main subjects. This essay will discuss both views and will argue that a balance approach should be considered.

On the one hand, qualifications like doctoring and engineering require a lot of time and focus to clear exams. They are risky fields and few mistakes can ruin your entire career.

They are hard to crack and require commitment. Individuals in these fields spent years to pass exams and develop practical skills. Doctors are important part of our society and engineers are pillars of economy. Hence, individuals in these fields should provide their best in their majors.

On the other hand, soft skills are also essentials to any field. The international economies are connected and people can find employment opportunities around the world. The basic requirement to work in an another country is language. Students are now looking internationally and they are keen to master other skills along with their major to find better salary packages around the world. The soft skills are important aspects of any professional career, people who lack these skills initally face challenges to find jobs and then while trying to be part of organization. Therefore, other subjects are also important and they should also be considered.

In conclusion, I would argue that one should know the time management skills, which will help him to properly manage time to pay full attention to their major qualificaton and spur some time to learn other subjects as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both perspectives and give a clear overall position: a balance between focusing on a qualification and learning other subjects. The discussion of demanding professions, such as medicine and engineering, is relevant, and you explain that additional skills may help students access international employment. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that mistakes can ruin a career does not show why students should devote all their time to their main subject, and the benefits of learning other subjects are narrowed mainly to language and employment. Develop each view with a specific example and explain more directly how a balanced approach would work.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from the demands of professional qualifications to the value of additional skills is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help the reader navigate the discussion. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical and a few connections between claims could be clearer. For instance, the shift from international economies to language requirements and then salary packages would benefit from more explicit explanation. The final paragraph introduces time management as the solution, but could connect this more directly to the arguments developed earlier.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “commitment,” “practical skills,” “employment opportunities,” and “qualification.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “doctoring,” “hard to crack,” “clear exams,” and “provide their best.” There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “initally” and “qualificaton.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for standard academic collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully; for example, use “medicine,” “pass examinations,” and “perform to the best of their ability.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “which,” and “who,” and most ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries. Examples include “Doctors are important part” (missing an article), “soft skills are also essentials” (agreement and form), and “in an another country” (article use). The sentence beginning “The soft skills are important aspects of any professional career, people who lack these skills…” joins two independent ideas with a comma, so it needs a full stop or a conjunction. The conclusion also shifts from “one” and “him” to “their.” Review these patterns while continuing to practise varied sentence structures.
