IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many university students yearn to gain knowledge about other subjects along with their majors, while others argue that it is more important to put all the efforts on studying for academic qualification. Notwithstanding the benefits of good qualification, I believe students should not be bound to their majors for learning.

Every university student requires to focus on their majors so that they can have a standard occupation in the future. Those with higher academic qualification tend to get into a well-established company with a handsome salary as soon as they graduate. For example, those with higher CGPA in university life can apply their erudition to any job in their field of knowledge and get a call for interview most of the time in case of Bangladesh. However, additional knowledge is also required to be prosperous in life.

A higher academic result may help to get a standard job, but if there is no prior knowledge of any other skills or subject, then the scope of better professions gets limited. They will not be able to solve real-life problems that are apart from their main subjects. For instance, if students of mechanical engineering do not have any fundamental knowledge of electrical engineering, then they will not get any job that necessitates the later knowledge. Eventually, their opportunities get limited and they may remain unemployed for a long time.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that, students should not only focus on their majors, but also concentrate on learning different subjects, which consequently will broaden their job opportunities and help them solve additional problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: the introduction acknowledges the value of a qualification, while the conclusion supports learning beyond a major. The discussion of focused study is relevant, with the link between strong results and employment illustrated through the Bangladesh example. Your case for broader learning is also supported by the engineering example. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first paragraph mainly explains career benefits, and the response does not explore why students might value other subjects for reasons beyond employment. Some claims, such as broader knowledge helping students solve problems, would benefit from a more specific explanation. This covers the task, but fuller development and more balanced support would make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from the value of qualifications to the benefits of additional knowledge is easy to follow, and transitions such as “For example,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal the argument. Some links are less precise or feel mechanical. For instance, “However, additional knowledge is also required” shifts to the opposing view within the first body paragraph, before that view is developed in the next paragraph. The repeated references to “higher academic” results and “opportunities” also make the progression somewhat repetitive. To strengthen cohesion, keep each paragraph focused on one side and use clearer references to connect claims and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “qualification,” “erudition,” “fundamental knowledge,” and “opportunities.” These choices allow you to discuss education and employment with some variety, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common language that are not always natural in context: “yearn to gain knowledge” sounds overly emotional, “handsome salary” is an awkward collocation here, and “standard occupation” is unclear. “The later knowledge” is also an inaccurate word choice for the intended meaning. Aim for precise, natural academic phrasing rather than choosing elevated words where a simpler expression would be clearer. More accurate collocations would improve flexibility and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if there is no prior knowledge … then the scope … gets limited” and a relative clause in “Those with higher academic qualification tend to get into…” Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors persist, however. “Every university student requires to focus” has an incorrect verb pattern; use “needs to focus.” In “if students … do not have … then they will not get,” the conditional is understandable, but the sentence could be controlled more smoothly. There are also article and punctuation issues, such as “higher academic qualification” and the unnecessary comma after “that” in the conclusion. Review verb patterns, articles and comma use to make complex sentences more consistently accurate.
