Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Students are divided into two views about the subjects they have been taught at university. Some individual are interested to learn about other subjects along with their main subjects because it can encourage students to expand their knowledge and interests. Other believes it is important to give all their attention in studying for grades because it can distract peers from their main focus. In my opinion, it is important to explore other subjects as well because it can give much broader knowledge than sticking to only one main subject.

University students often encounter with multiple subjects during their academic years which help to shape their career path. Having opportunity to explore other subjects with their main develop curiosity and develop creative approach and expand their knowledge. For instance: During my academic years in university, the main subjects were more practical but one of my elective was more theory base and i develop more interest into that which later help me to shape my main subjects with proper theoretical reference that i learn from these which helps me stand out from my other classmates.

Although it is studying multiple subjects help students to understand things broadly. It can also significantly contribute to distract many from their main subject which could lower their score. My friend also explore the theoretical subject along with me because by the end of semester she was struggling to keeping up her main subjects which effect her results badly and she had to retake one the the main subject exam for being qualify for next year.

In conclusion, i genuinely think it plays great role having some other subjects along with main which help many to stand out among other classmates but only if someone is been able to balance it properly, without loosing focus from compulsory subjects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: you support learning additional subjects, while recognising that they may distract students from their main qualification. The examples from your own university experience and your friend’s results make the discussion relevant and help explain both sides. This meets the task well overall. However, the argument for focusing solely on the qualification is less fully developed: the risk of lower scores is explained, but you could also discuss why strong subject focus matters for professional competence or meeting course requirements. Some points, such as how electives help students “stand out,” would benefit from a clearer explanation of the specific advantage. More balanced development and precise support would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction presents the two views and your position, separate body paragraphs discuss the benefits and drawbacks, and the conclusion restates your opinion with a qualification about balance. This makes the progression easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Although,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion.” At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear. The paragraph beginning “Although it is studying multiple subjects” does not form a clear contrast grammatically, and “which help” in the opening paragraph has an unclear reference. The long personal example also contains several ideas in one sentence. Use clearer topic sentences and divide complex examples into shorter, logically connected sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “expand their knowledge,” “career path,” “creative approach,” “main focus,” and “compulsory subjects.” These phrases communicate the central ideas, and the personal examples give you opportunities to use relevant academic language. There are also several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision, such as “theoretical subject,” “theory base,” “stand out from my other classmates,” and “plays great role.” Some word forms and spelling are also inconsistent, including “loosing” where “losing” is intended. Aim for more natural collocations and accurate forms, for example, “broaden their knowledge,” “a theoretical subject,” and “play a significant role.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because,” a contrast introduced by “Although,” and a conditional idea in the conclusion. The main meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation remain. For example, “Some individual are” needs plural agreement, while “one of my elective was” needs a plural noun after “one of.” The sentence beginning “Although it is studying multiple subjects” is structurally faulty, and “she was struggling to keeping up” uses the wrong verb pattern. Capitalisation of “I” is also inconsistent. Review agreement and verb patterns, and edit long sentences for complete, well-formed clauses; greater accuracy would make your varied structures more effective.
