IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many students want to learn about various subjects apart from their core subject mainly due to curiosity. Although other people suggest that students should solely focus on their target subject. I believe that student should be exposed to different study programs alonside their main subject since this can help them to gain knowledge about diverse topics and create innovative ideas.

There is no boundary of knowledge when new fields of subjects emerge on a daily basis. Most students spend major portion of their time studying topics related to their major program. For example, engineering students reguarly practise calculus, algothrims and thus never get the opportunity to read a classical literature piece. Some student are pressured to take certain subjects by their parents but that should not stop them from pursuing a subject they are passionate about. Learning a new language, taking history course can help to shape a great mind. This why it is necessary that students get the opportunity to study range of subjects which will ultimately help to develop transferable skills in a variety of fields and encourage interdisciplinary thinking. In addition, employers often value candidates who not only possess knowledge about their subject but also practical skills.

Although, dedicating full attention to core subjects is also crucial to achieve academic excellence and help to develop specialized knowledge. Subsequently, studying too many subjects can increase unnecessary workload that may cause stress and reduce time to study for assignments or exams. It is also worth to note that many science majors require specialized trainings such as medical students need to dedicate a large share of their time to clinical practise so unrelated courses have no impact on them.

In conclusion, although concentrating on major is crucial for achieving academic excellence, students should be allowed to explore other disciplines. Instead of dividing equal time to numerous subjects they should prioritise their degree while selectively acquiring additional skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both perspectives and maintain a clear opinion: students should explore other disciplines while prioritising their degree. The discussion of broader study is supported with examples such as engineering students encountering literature and learning languages or history, while the opposing view is explained through workload, exams, and medical training. This meets the task well, and the conclusion reinforces your balanced position. To make the response more fully developed, explain a few claims more precisely. For instance, the point that unrelated courses have “no impact” on medical students is broad; you could acknowledge how complementary subjects might still benefit them, then explain why clinical demands make specialisation more important. More specific examples would also strengthen the claims about employers and transferable skills.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that returns to your position. Ideas generally progress logically, and transitions such as “For example,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. The contrast between broad learning and specialisation is easy to follow. However, some links feel mechanical or are not fully integrated. The opening “Although other people suggest…” is a sentence fragment, and “Although, dedicating…” begins the opposing paragraph awkwardly. Within the first body paragraph, the move from parental pressure to transferable skills could be connected more explicitly. Use transitions selectively and make the relationship between each example and the paragraph’s main claim clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “core subject,” “academic excellence,” “specialized knowledge,” “transferable skills,” and “interdisciplinary thinking.” These expressions help communicate the main ideas, and attempts at more academic phrasing are evident. At times, however, word choice and collocation are imprecise, as in “a great mind,” “study range of subjects,” and “unnecessary workload.” There are also spelling errors such as “alonside,” “reguarly,” and “algothrims,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, “a broad range of subjects” is more idiomatic than “study range of subjects.” Greater consistency in spelling conventions would also improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses with “since,” “although,” and “who,” and most of your meaning remains clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as the explanation that studying too many subjects can increase workload and reduce study time. However, several grammatical errors remain. “Although other people suggest…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, while “I believe that student should…” needs a plural or an article. Other examples include “Most students spend major portion” and “This why it is necessary,” which require an article and a verb respectively. Punctuation around introductory clauses also needs attention. Practise checking each sentence for a complete main clause, subject–verb agreement, and missing articles.
