IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Students are the backbone of a country and for development, they play a crucial role. It is argue that the students have different aims and they want to learn a variety of subjects rather than one. On the other hand, some serve most of their time in developing careers. Although, it would be a positive development but learning is not a small term, it contains a vast understanding and knowledge.
To begin with the idea, there were a large number of universities in the world and they thought more than 48 subjects in the 4-year program. Moreover, they trained pupils in almost every discipline that makes multi-talented individuals and they can participate in every field of life. For example, a multi- talented person can solve everything even if it is related to math, science, or physics while other ones cannot
On the other hand, there was a range of pupils that just concentrated on major subjects not paying attention to minors. They just focus on one goal and if they face different tasks, they fail. The chance to get a good job is minor for them because they did not know about further fields and their applications. For instance, I know a girl who is a topper in agriculture and she is a teacher in a school because she does not know applications of agricultural study, so she is failing in professional life.
In my opinion, knowledge is important for life and we must learn things due to advancement in technology.
In conclusion, although sometimes learners achieve the desired goal by luck but they remain stuck whole life while a multi-talented person not stuck and participate in every field of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views: the first body paragraph supports learning across disciplines, while the next describes students who focus only on their major. Your opinion—that broad knowledge is important—is also stated, especially in “we must learn things due to advancement in technology.” However, the discussion is only partly developed. The claim that a multi-talented person “can solve everything” is too broad, and the example about the agriculture student does not clearly explain why her subject knowledge led to her teaching job or how this illustrates the disadvantages of specialisation. Clarify the benefits and drawbacks of each approach, then support them with more directly relevant reasoning or examples. A more consistent explanation of your position would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, an opinion, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the opening paragraph moves from students’ aims to careers and then to a general statement about learning without establishing the relationship between these points. Some links are also mechanical, and the conclusion repeats the idea that broadly knowledgeable people can participate in every field rather than drawing the discussion together. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the claim it supports; this would make the organisation easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “qualification,” “discipline,” “multi-talented,” and “professional life,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts to express more abstract ideas, such as “advancement in technology.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, including “serve most of their time,” “thought more than 48 subjects,” and “the chance to get a good job is minor.” Repetition of “field,” “life,” and “subjects” also limits precision. Choose vocabulary that expresses the intended relationship accurately, and check common academic collocations. For example, students may “devote time to” a qualification, and job prospects may be “limited” or “reduced.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “Although” and a relative clause in “a multi-talented person … while other ones cannot.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. Examples include “It is argue,” “there were a large number of universities … and they thought,” and “They just focus … if they face different tasks, they fail,” where verb forms and tense consistency need attention. Articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries also require more control. Practise building accurate sentences with one clear main clause, then add subordinate clauses; review past and present verb forms, subject–verb agreement, and punctuation, especially around contrast clauses.
