IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are two categories of undergraduates. While some are interested in learning about various subjects along with their main subject, others contend that it is paramount to devote all the time and focus on studying for a qualification. In my view, studying subjects other than the main qualification plays vital role in developing socio-economic skills.

On the one hand, studying compulsory courses suhc as communication skills, social studies, language courses, within the qualification degree provides diverse knowledge. These subjects foster interpersonal skills among students, which will help them in achieving better job opportunities. For instance, being a student of BS (hons) Physics I was been taught about subjects like biology , chemistry and statistic and computer as these subjects are inter-related and alos helped me with my main degree. Having knowledge about diffirent subjects provide confidence and foster communication skills among learners.

On the other hand, as these courses are not the main area of their studies some students find it difficult to learn because of lack of interest; consequently they either fail these subjects or score less grades. Furthermore, their commulative grade point drop because of these subjects. In order to maintian their grades they have to allocate more time to courses rather than to the main area of qualification. For instance many medical students complains about studying mathematics becasue of their lack of interest in the subject.

To conclude, learning various subjects along with the main courses of study provide diverse knowledge which help undergraduates to land on better careers in future. However, students should learn time management to be able to focus on all the courses as these will help them in having better tomorrow.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear preference for learning beyond the main qualification, so the response stays relevant to the question. The first body paragraph explains potential benefits, including interpersonal skills and broader knowledge, and your physics-student example gives this view some personal support. You also explain why students may prioritise their main subject, linking low interest in courses such as mathematics to weaker grades and extra study time. However, the second view is presented mainly as a difficulty rather than as a positive case for concentrating on a qualification, and the conclusion does not fully weigh the two positions. Develop that argument and explain more precisely how broader study improves career prospects to make the discussion more balanced and fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow, and the examples are placed alongside the relevant points. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, links between ideas can feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “these subjects” and “For instance,” and some sentences move quickly from one claim to another without explaining the connection. Improve the flow by varying transitions and using clearer references, while adding a sentence that explicitly connects each example to the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “interpersonal skills,” “qualification,” “allocate,” and “commulative grade point,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “paramount” and “diverse knowledge.” However, several spelling errors and inaccurate or unnatural word combinations are noticeable, including “suhc,” “diffirent,” “maintian,” and “land on better careers.” Some expressions are also imprecise: “socio-economic skills” does not clearly describe the benefits you discuss, and “better tomorrow” is vague. These issues limit precision and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common academic collocations, such as “secure better career prospects” and “maintain their grades.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While some are interested…” and a cause-and-effect sentence using “consequently.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “I was been taught” has an incorrect verb form, while “subjects … provide” and “which help undergraduates” show problems with subject–verb agreement. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “plays vital role” and “job opportunities. For instance.” Practise checking verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation after drafting. More accurate control of these patterns, alongside your existing attempts at complex sentences, would make the writing clearer.
