IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some students want to learn other subjects in addition to their main subjects, while others argue that it's more necessary to give their time as well as their attention to study for a qualification. I partly agree with both points because I think it depends on student ability and on difficulty level of course they are doing.
Proponents of additional learning argue that they should learn other subjects in contrast to their main subjects. Their believe is, it gives their mind a vast range to think more efficiently and they would be able to make more acuurate decisions in their life. Learning addtional subjects can be useful for someone with extraordinary abilities. Moreover, learning other subjects can provide them with a broader view of things.
Conversely, the other argue that it is more important to all your time and attention to study for a qualification rather than studying extra stuff. They say that additional learning can sometimes effect your qualfication, altering your mind to subjects which are not part of your course. Their opinion is also right. My opinion is that additional learning can bring certain positive changes for someone who can handle it without having negative effects on their main course. This is mainly because all students do not have same caliber. For instance, if there's a student who is already struggling with his main subjects for qualification, it would be in appropriate for him to study other subjects in addition to his main subjects. But on the other hand, if there is student who can easily study his main subjects and still left with a lot of time then studying additional subject would be highly beneficial for him.
So, I think it depend on student abilities as well as the circumstances student is in. If a student is earning to support his studies then he would definitely not want to study other subjects in addition to his main subjects. Because this can become a cause of failiure in his main subjects.
To conclude, I would say a student should addopt habits which would not effect his studies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear, qualified opinion: whether extra study is worthwhile depends on a student’s ability, workload and circumstances. The examples of a student struggling with core subjects and one with spare time help explain this position. However, the first view is less fully developed: claims that additional subjects improve decision-making and broaden perspective are asserted rather than illustrated or explained in detail. The point about a student earning money to support their studies is relevant, but its connection to choosing extra subjects could be made clearer. To strengthen the response, develop each view with a specific example and explain more directly how it supports your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall structure, moving from an introduction to the two views, then your opinion and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main stages, and signposts such as “Conversely,” “For instance,” and “To conclude” make the direction of the argument clear. Some connections are less smooth or precise: “Their opinion is also right” does not specify which part of the opposing argument you accept, and the final paragraph repeats the dependence on ability and circumstances without adding much. The repeated use of “main subjects” also makes the progression feel somewhat mechanical. Use clearer references to the specific ideas being discussed and make the conclusion synthesise rather than restate your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the argument, including “qualification,” “additional learning,” “broader view,” and “struggling.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “caliber” and “beneficial,” though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. For example, “their mind a vast range” and “effect your qualification” do not express the intended meanings clearly, while “extra stuff” is too informal for this essay. Spelling errors such as “acuurate,” “addtional,” “qualfication,” and “failiure” are noticeable. Aim for more precise academic collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your ideas clearer and give your vocabulary greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures such as “if there’s a student who is already struggling…” and a reason clause beginning “This is mainly because…”. Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “Their believe is” instead of “Their belief is,” “it depend” instead of “it depends,” and “there is student” instead of “there is a student.” The sentence beginning “Conversely, the other argue” also has agreement and sentence-structure problems. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, especially in longer sentences. More consistent accuracy in these areas would make the complex ideas easier to follow.
