IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In today's world, there is a growing debate about whether university students should be focusing on a particular subject for their studies or exploring other subjects while persuing a different degree. It is widely accepted by society that attending a university should be specified to a career since students need to be ready entirely for their professions. On the other hand, there're are students who want to study further in different subjects in order to gain knowledge and be ready for any circumstances. In my opinion, it is quite important to be prepared for anything that could come in your ways. Therefore, learning further subjects would be more ideal.
To begin with, learning a particular subject in a university could prepare you to focus on your career. Consequently, the knowledge can be readily used for specific profession with more time to explore in details. For example, in recent survey from SBS international school chiangmai, the highschool students who spend 70% on one subject has higher distinction rate in their year-end exams.
Nevertheless, there is a number of students that would like to persue variety of subjects during their school year to apply life skills in their daily activities with proper-learnt knowledge. As students will get to learn what they are not familiar with, they will gain insight with different point of view. For instance, if there is a stranger with urgent need of medication on a road where hospital is far away, you can save some time by doing proper CPR before ambulance arrive on destination even if you are an engineer.
In conclusion, knowing limited amount of information can't be an only solution for a person to live their life to fullest although it can be benefitial for specific professional. General knowledge is needed in ways.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear preference for learning additional subjects, so the response is relevant to the task. The paragraph supporting focused study explains that it can prepare students for a career, and the survey example attempts to support this point. However, the example concerns high-school exam results rather than university qualifications, so its relevance is limited. The case for broader study is more developed through the example of using CPR, but this illustrates practical knowledge more than studying other academic subjects. Your conclusion restates your position, though “General knowledge is needed in ways” is unclear and does not fully explain why a broader education is preferable. Develop each view with examples directly connected to university study and qualifications.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “To begin with,” “Nevertheless,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the contrast between focused study and broader learning is apparent. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, some links are mechanical, and a few references or connections are unclear. For example, “Therefore” in the introduction does not clearly follow from the preceding contrast, while “General knowledge is needed in ways” leaves the final point incomplete. Make the relationship between each example and its main claim more explicit, and use transitions that express the precise logical connection.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss education and careers, including “specific profession,” “gain insight,” “distinction rate,” and “life skills.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “ready entirely for their professions,” “explore in details,” and “proper-learnt knowledge.” Spelling and word-form errors—including “persuing,” “persue,” “highschool,” and “benefitial”—also reduce accuracy, although the intended meaning is generally understandable. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully. For instance, “prepare students for their careers” is clearer than “ready entirely for their professions,” and “explore the subject in greater depth” is more idiomatic than “explore in details.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional example beginning “if there is a stranger” and a subordinate clause introduced by “although.” Most ideas remain understandable, which is consistent with this level of grammatical control. Some errors occur in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “there're are students” contains a duplicated verb, “there is a number of students” should use plural agreement, and “the highschool students who spend 70% … has” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The final sentence, “General knowledge is needed in ways,” is also grammatically incomplete in meaning. Review agreement and article use, and revise sentences aloud to check that each clause forms a complete, clear thought.
