IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is a debate among university students whether they should only focus on academic subjects or also study some secondary subjects. We will discuss both point of view. I strongly agree that students should be allowed to learn other subjects so they can get more opportunities in practical life.
On the one hand, some students believe that they should be permitted to learn other subjects than main subjects. This has certain benefits such as learning other subjects can improve their skills. For example, if a student doing medical studies gets a chance to learn other skills such as graphic designing or computer science can work better in professional career with hands on other topics such as he can also use computer. Moreover, learning other subjects can improve their knowledge and their performance. This can give them more earning opportunities rather than relying on just one job.
On the other hand, some students believe that their main focus should be academic subjects to secure good grades. For instance, better knowledge about main subjects can help them have better understanding of their degree they are working hard for. Furthermore, it also helps students avoid distractions and they can better focus on the main courses. It can ultimately help them get good results in their academic careers.
In conclusion, benefits of learning secondary courses such as it can improve their other practical skills and more job opportunities outweighs the benefits of learning main courses such as they can secure good grades which can help them complete their education. I strongly agree with the former perspective because I think learning more skills can improve productivity and performance in practical life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both perspectives and state your position clearly: you support studying additional subjects because they may build practical skills and broaden employment options. The examples of a medical student learning computing or graphic design, and of focusing on core subjects to achieve stronger grades, are relevant to the question. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for additional subjects receives more explanation, while the benefits of concentrating on a qualification are mostly asserted rather than illustrated. Some claims, such as improved performance and more earning opportunities, would be more convincing with a specific explanation or example. To strengthen the response, explain the trade-off more fully and show how your examples support your opinion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion that restates your opinion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectations securely, and there is some effective organisation beyond a basic sequence. However, links between ideas can feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover” and “Furthermore,” and some references are not fully clear: “This” in the first body paragraph could refer to several preceding ideas. The conclusion also repeats points rather than synthesising them. Use more varied, precise links and make each sentence’s connection to the previous one explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “academic subjects,” “qualification,” “practical skills,” “distractions,” and “earning opportunities.” The meaning is generally understandable, and there are attempts to express ideas beyond very basic vocabulary. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “hands on other topics,” “better understanding of their degree,” and “performance in practical life.” Repetition of “subjects,” “students,” and “better” also reduces flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms; for example, describe applying digital skills in a professional setting or gaining broader career prospects. This would make your argument sound more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, including conditional phrasing such as “if a student doing medical studies gets a chance…” and clauses introduced by “because” and “which.” Most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however, especially in longer sentences. For example, “if a student doing medical studies gets a chance … can work better” lacks a clear subject for “can work,” while “benefits … outweighs” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction in “We will discuss both point of view.” Work on making each clause complete, checking singular and plural agreement, and punctuating longer sentences so that complex ideas remain clear.
