IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate about the importance of different subjects during graduation. While some students believe that they should learn other disciplines in addition to their main subjects, others argue that it is better to focus and learn only for qualification. In my opinion, students should learn different subjects because they can improve their skills and explore their professional interests.

On the one hand, people believe that focusing on different field of studies in university can help students gain different skills. This approach helps students to gain some extra skills which can benefit in their professional life. For instance, if medical students also learn basics of information technology, they can use this skill to spread awareness of different diseases through the use of different social media tools. Not only does studying different disciplines help to gain skills, but also a chance to explore individual interests. for example, an engineering student can find a arts discipline of more interest, which could provide a better career opportunity to that student. So the more students study different subject the more they can explore their interests.

On the other hand, many people believe that individuals should only focus on their qualification rather taking interest in additional subjects. Not only does it distract learners, but also result in poor overall scores. For example, engineering students can find it difficult to give extra time to minor subjects because of their busy routine.

In my opinion, students should take interest in different areas of study in university. Although some disciplines need more attention and time for better understanding, giving some time to other courses not only help students improve professional skill, but also create different career opportunities for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: you support studying additional subjects because they may build skills and reveal career interests. The examples about medical students using social media and an engineering student discovering another field are relevant and help explain your position. However, the opposing view is less fully developed: you mention distraction, lower scores and a busy routine, but do not explain in detail why concentrating on a qualification may be especially important or give a developed example. Some points in support of your view also remain broad, such as the claim that extra study creates better career opportunities. Explain the consequences of each view more fully and connect examples directly to your reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. The signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” make the discussion easy to follow, and the conclusion returns to your central position. This coherent structure meets the expected level, with some progression between the main points. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, particularly in the repeated “Not only … but also” constructions, and the supporting ideas within the first body paragraph could be separated or linked more smoothly. The lowercase “for example” after a full stop also interrupts the flow. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer links between each claim, explanation and example.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “disciplines,” “professional interests,” “qualification,” and “career opportunity.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the examples show an attempt to discuss education and employment with some specificity. At times, however, word choice and collocation are imprecise or repetitive: “different subjects” and “different disciplines” recur, while “learn only for qualification” and “find a arts discipline of more interest” are not natural expressions. “Minor subjects” may also misrepresent the idea of additional subjects. Aim for more precise academic phrasing and vary repeated terms; check articles and word forms as part of vocabulary editing. These improvements would make your meaning more fluent and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the concessive opening “While some students believe…” and the inversion “Not only does studying different disciplines help…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, however: “focusing on different field” needs a plural or article, “a arts discipline” has an article error, and “Not only does it distract learners, but also result” lacks a matching verb structure. In the conclusion, “not only help students” should agree with its subject. Review agreement, articles and parallel structures, and punctuate sentence openings consistently. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the range you already attempt.
