Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify both views: learning additional subjects may broaden knowledge, while concentrating on a main subject may improve academic results and job opportunities. You also state an opinion that both are important. However, these points are only briefly presented, and examples such as reading in a university library or getting a “best job” are unclear and not sufficiently explained. The response therefore addresses the task only minimally, rather than developing and supporting the discussion. The required minimum of 250 words is not met: the response contains 148 words, and 30 words copied from the prompt were not counted. To improve, explain the benefits and drawbacks of each view with a specific example, then make your own position clearer and support it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to organise the response around the two views, using “On the one hand,” and “In conclusion,” and the reader can identify a beginning, discussion and ending. However, the ideas do not progress clearly within the paragraphs: the first view, for instance, moves from gaining knowledge to “waste time” and then to the library without clear links. The second view and your opinion are also compressed together, while several sentences run into one another. Use separate, clearly developed paragraphs for the introduction, each view, your opinion and the conclusion. Connect each example directly to the point it supports, and use punctuation to make the sequence easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “main subject,” “qualification,” “knowledge,” “percentage” and “opportunity.” This gives the response a basic range, but vocabulary is repetitive and several word combinations are unclear or unnatural, which can strain the reader. For example, “gain to knowledge new thing” and “percentage are grow” do not express the intended ideas clearly; “best job” is also imprecise. Build a more accurate set of phrases for discussing education and employment, such as “broaden their knowledge,” “improve academic performance” and “increase their career prospects.” Check spelling and word forms, including “additional,” and avoid repeating “important” when a more precise description is available.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few longer structures, including a reason introduced by “because” and an example introduced by “for example,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns and many are incomplete or difficult to follow. Errors in sentence construction and verb forms appear throughout, as in “some student believe that learn” and “percentage are grow.” Agreement and articles are also unreliable, for example “Both opinion are important” and “if you university library.” Missing sentence boundaries and inconsistent capitalisation further obscure meaning. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles and punctuation. For example, write “Some students believe that learning other subjects is useful” rather than leaving the verb pattern incomplete.
