Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years it is a general perseption that students should opt for extra subjects along with their main subject. However, some people are of the opinion that they should only focus on their primary subject. In my perspective the student should only need to emphasize on their own main area of study instead of taking time and studying other subjects.

Now a days, many university students opting and taking interest in studying additional courses along with their main area of qualification. As they want to broaden and diversify their knowledge. According to them, studying extra subjects make them well aware of the different knowledge streams which eventually make them a knowledgeable pupils which can easily fit in any role due to their diversified skill sets. Due to this the course work now a days in many universities are designed and amended, that included many other important courseworks that are not directly linked or associated with the main focus of study.

On the other hand, some people are of the opinion that the students should only and solely focus on studying their main area of qualification. As it will make them a master of that subject which eventually help them in later years in term of job hunting in a specialized areas due to their strong foundation in that particular area.

In my view, the students should give their entire time and focus on a single area of study. Such diversified learning without mastering it, would not be that much beneficial in compare with giving all efforts to a single area of study. For example giving entire time on a single field of study will lead them to master all the espect of that particular study and that will be helpfull for them to identify loopholes and working on that limitation will make them novel. To conclude, the students should only foucus on a single area of study.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a consistent opinion: you explain that additional subjects can broaden students’ knowledge and skills, while arguing that concentrating on a main subject can build expertise and support specialised employment. The example about mastering a field and identifying its limitations is relevant, but it is asserted rather than illustrated with a specific situation. The benefits of studying extra subjects are also described in general terms, with little explanation of when this breadth might be useful. This meets the task well overall, but the two sides are not developed equally in depth. To strengthen the response, explain each view through a concrete example and show more clearly why your preferred approach is more beneficial.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your own position, and a conclusion. The progression from the opposing arguments to your opinion is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” help distinguish the perspectives. However, some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “which eventually,” and the opening paragraph’s position is repeated in the final paragraph without adding much. The long sentence beginning “According to them” also packs several related claims together, making the reasoning less easy to follow. Use a wider range of natural transitions, make references between sentences more precise, and divide complex explanations into clearer steps.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “diversify their knowledge,” “skill sets,” “specialized areas,” and “strong foundation.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and attempts at less common language show some flexibility. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “emphasize on their own main area,” “knowledgeable pupils,” and “in compare with.” Spelling errors, including “perseption,” “espect,” “helpfull,” and “foucus,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “focus on their main subject” and “compared with” rather than translating phrases directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses introduced by “As” and “which,” and the main meaning is generally clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “In my view, the students should give their entire time and focus on a single area of study.” However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns recur. “As they want to broaden and diversify their knowledge” is a fragment, while “studying extra subjects make them” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and prepositions, as in “in a specialized areas” and “in term of job hunting.” Practise building complete sentences and checking agreement and article use, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
