IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many undergraduate students desire to study additional subjects for attaining extra skills and knowledge. On the other hand some people believe that it is very crucial to give all your attention to study core subjects for attaining a specific qualification. In this essay we will discuss both views in detail by adding some real life examples.
Nowadays the majority youth is attracted towards doing something out of the box rather than only studying the main qualification. Additional subjects are introduced by many universities which help students to obtain a degree or an additional skill such as many MBBS students at universities are studying finance and technology as additional subjects which helps them by opening more gates of opportunities in the finance industry and push them forward towards a successful career.
Many people are not in favour of additional subjects as they think that it is very important for students to give all their time and attention to their degree rather than wasting time on additional subjects. This can be true in many cases as many students who are studying engineering and medicine require a lot of interest with brainstorming ideas and skills, they are very busy with their core subjects and if they will be forced for studying additional subjects they will not be able to concentrate on their main degree and will land to study the same course again as they will not be able to clear the final examination.
I personally recommend that a choice should be offered to students that if they wish to study additional subjects, this can be a wise decision for every student and help them in their future and career ahead.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state your own position: the first body paragraph explains how additional subjects may broaden career opportunities, while the second gives the concern that they could distract students from demanding degrees. The examples of medical students studying finance or technology and of engineering or medicine students facing heavy workloads are relevant. However, the benefits are explained more clearly than the opposing view, and the final recommendation that students should have a choice is brief and not fully justified. Some claims, such as students having to repeat a course, would be stronger with a clearer explanation or a specific example. Develop each side more evenly and connect your opinion directly to the reasons discussed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “I personally recommend” help readers follow the discussion, and the ideas generally progress in a logical order. This meets the lower-band expectation for coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, linking is occasionally mechanical, and the long second body paragraph contains several ideas in one sentence, making the relationship between workload, concentration, and examination results harder to follow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing, and make the conclusion briefly synthesise both views rather than introducing the recommendation without further explanation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “additional subjects,” “qualification,” “opportunities,” “core subjects,” and “concentrate.” There are also attempts at less common or topic-specific expressions, such as “brainstorming ideas” and “successful career,” although some combinations are not natural or precise in context. Phrases such as “opening more gates of opportunities” and “land to study the same course again” make the meaning less fluent, even though the reader can generally understand your point. Aim for more accurate collocations and avoid repeating broad terms such as “subjects” and “students.” More precise academic wording would help you express the career and workload arguments clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if they will be forced for studying additional subjects” and a relative clause in “which help students.” These attempts show some range, but several sentences contain errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, or sentence construction. For example, “which helps them” does not agree with the plural noun “subjects,” and “if they will be forced” needs a different conditional form. The sentence beginning “Additional subjects are introduced…” also becomes difficult to control as several ideas are joined together. Review conditional patterns and subject–verb agreement, and divide long sentences so that your meaning remains clear. Punctuation and sentence boundaries also need more consistent control.
