Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for self-employment and the potential disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of job market instability and the risks of financial loss. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'peace of mind' is mentioned but not explained, and the discussion on disadvantages could be more detailed. The position is clear, but the essay would benefit from more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. Overall, it covers the requirements adequately but lacks the depth of development expected at higher levels.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'Such as, if the person...'. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and sentence flow, particularly in the introduction where the connection between the two main ideas is slightly disjointed. Despite these minor flaws, the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'entrepreneur' and 'occupational opportunities'. However, there are several instances of inaccurate word choice and collocation, such as 'succeed their lives' instead of 'succeed in their lives', 'starts the own business' instead of 'start their own business', and 'wast their life savings' instead of 'waste their life savings'. These errors do not impede communication but indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('job market has crashed', 'it leads to many people to choose'), article usage ('the self-employment', 'the own startup'), and prepositional errors ('compare witht the huge population'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended message, which is characteristic of a Band 6 performance.
