Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing reasons for self-employment and its disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. The first paragraph introduces the topic but includes some irrelevant points, such as the discussion on immigration and parents' businesses, which does not directly answer why people choose self-employment. The arguments regarding the disadvantages are more relevant, but the logic occasionally falters, such as the rhetorical question about who would work as a laborer. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments lack depth and focus, often drifting into tangential topics rather than fully exploring the core reasons and drawbacks.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is frequently interrupted by unclear transitions and disjointed ideas. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'In a nutshell'), they are often used mechanically or inappropriately. For instance, the transition 'The growing trend of people to attain international education' does not logically follow the previous paragraph. Referencing is sometimes ambiguous, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's train of thought. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear, unified focus, which hinders the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'thunder of efforts', 'strengthen their financial arises', and 'serves numerous beneficial'. Some words are used incorrectly, such as 'absentees' to refer to employees. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of natural collocation and the reliance on basic or misused vocabulary limits the score. To improve, the student should focus on learning word families and common collocations rather than attempting to use complex-sounding but incorrect phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Manager do not have'), article misuse, and awkward sentence construction ('The growing influence of individuals to become self-employed... has sparked various objections'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are fragmented or run-on. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader and indicate a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms. A focus on basic sentence structure and proofreading for common errors would be beneficial.
