Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for self-employment and the potential disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the explanation for why people choose self-employment relies on repetitive phrasing like 'work in freedom' and 'generate maximum profit' without exploring deeper motivations like work-life balance or technological shifts. The disadvantages are also briefly touched upon, focusing mainly on stress and financial loss. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced examples and elaborate on the implications of your points rather than simply stating them. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments lack depth and analytical detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in the text. However, the internal cohesion within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph is repetitive, and the use of 'they' as a pronoun is occasionally ambiguous, making it unclear whether you are referring to the workers or the business owners. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear referencing would enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. You rely on simple terms like 'good', 'difficult', and 'work', and there are some inaccuracies in word formation, such as 'a businessmen' (should be 'businesspeople' or 'entrepreneurs') and 'self-employeed' (spelling error). While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'financial loss' and 'generate maximum profit', the range is limited. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and collocations, and ensure you are using the correct word forms in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder readability. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it leds to stress'), missing articles (e.g., 'work as a employee'), and punctuation errors. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. You should focus on proofreading for basic errors such as pluralisation and verb tense consistency. Additionally, try to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or relative clauses, to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
