Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for choosing self-employment and the potential disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is limited. The reasons provided (confidence, financial position) are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. The discussion of disadvantages is brief and lacks specific examples or a more nuanced exploration of the risks involved. The essay structure is present, but the arguments remain at a surface level, which prevents a higher score. To improve, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations and concrete examples, ensuring that the discussion of disadvantages is as thorough as the discussion of advantages.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical and sometimes inaccurate (e.g., 'rathere than if talk about', 'there we all should have'). The progression of ideas is occasionally disjointed, particularly within the second paragraph where the transition between points is abrupt. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical flow of the argument. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and phrases more naturally to connect your sentences and paragraphs, and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There is a reliance on basic, repetitive language (e.g., 'good', 'better', 'business', 'work'). Some word choices are unnatural or incorrect, such as 'occupied a best business' or 'make more increase to sub business'. There are also minor spelling errors like 'todays' instead of 'today's'. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to employment and business, and focus on using collocations correctly to express your ideas more precisely and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('most of people choice'), article usage, and sentence fragments. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and missing commas. These errors are noticeable and occasionally make the reader work harder to understand the intended meaning. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and practice proofreading your work to identify and correct punctuation errors.
