Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for self-employment and listing disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is limited and often unclear. The argument regarding the difference between a 'businessman' and 'self-employed' is confusing and lacks logical depth. The example provided is relevant but poorly integrated, making it difficult to follow the writer's intended point. The response lacks a clear introduction and conclusion, and the overall position is not well-articulated, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The essay lacks a clear structure. The use of bullet points for disadvantages is inappropriate for an IELTS essay, which requires formal paragraphing. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'that's why' and 'in the other end'. The progression of ideas is disjointed, and the lack of clear transitions between sentences makes the text difficult to follow. Paragraphing is not used effectively to separate the different parts of the task, which significantly impacts the logical flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary is basic and often inaccurate, which frequently impedes communication. Phrases like 'medical effect' and 'slave life' are used in ways that do not fit the formal context of an academic essay. There is significant repetition of words such as 'work', 'business', and 'self-employed'. The student struggles with word choice and collocation, such as 'loose the human empower' and 'works more harder', which indicates a limited range of vocabulary and difficulty in expressing complex ideas precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often obscure meaning. Sentence structures are mostly simple or fragmented, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Errors in subject-verb agreement, tense usage (e.g., 'he is not understand'), and word order are pervasive. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capital letters and incorrect usage of commas. These persistent errors make the text difficult to read and demonstrate a lack of control over basic grammatical structures.
