IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation.

Why might this be the case?

What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

the trend of self-employment has been increasing as compared to doing a work in company. This is due to the lack of infrastructure for promotions and underpaid salaries. Moreover, starting own business is quite challenging but it is considered more productive and progressive.

Most of the companies and organisations do not make a proper infrastructure for promotions. The workers have to wait for decades to get a chance of promotion which makes them demotivated and depressed. Moreover, the pay-package is not compatible to the rising inflation which in turn leads to financial instability. One more reason is the companies do not reward incentives for their hardwork and workload, the employees do not awarded with extra charges for their devotion and passion. That is why they started lossing their interest in the job and become dull and tedious with the time.

On the contrary, to start their own business is more demanding and challenging at the beginning because it needs more experience and assets. Most of the people fail to decide that in which field they can work more efficiently. However, the people who take advice from the professionals and put their efforts into the business, may have greatet chances to succeed.

The self-employment have many benefits, for instance, it is considered more productive, as the hard work and the dedication may brings the desireable consequences. Furthermore, the individuals become more confident and vigilant when they get success in their business.

All in all, the job in an organisation may provides a temporary income and settlement but the business can create more chnances to grow and productive in their field.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the rise in self-employment and the disadvantages of this path. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The reasons provided (lack of promotion, low pay) are relevant, but the discussion of disadvantages is less detailed, focusing primarily on the initial difficulty of starting a business rather than the ongoing risks like income instability or lack of benefits. The position is clear, but the argument could be strengthened by providing more specific examples or a more balanced exploration of the drawbacks. Overall, it meets the requirements but remains at a general level of discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'On the contrary', and 'All in all', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is a bit disjointed. For example, the transition between the discussion of company infrastructure and the mention of 'extra charges' could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for self-employment from the challenges, contributing to a coherent overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using more precise language, such as 'vigilant', 'demotivated', and 'infrastructure', though some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'extra charges for their devotion' or 'dull and tedious with the time'. There are also minor spelling errors like 'lossing' and 'chnances'. While the range is sufficient to communicate the main points, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the self-employment have', 'the job... may provides') and article usage. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'the employees do not awarded with extra charges'. These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on consistent verb conjugation and refining the use of passive voice constructions.
