Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay identifies reasons for self-employment (freedom, job satisfaction) and mentions disadvantages (responsibility), the discussion is severely underdeveloped. The conclusion is incomplete, and the second body paragraph is cut off mid-sentence. Because the task is not fully addressed due to the lack of length and incomplete arguments, the response cannot reach a higher band. To improve, you must ensure all parts of the prompt are explored with sufficient depth and that the essay is completed in full.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay uses basic cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Firstly', and 'However', but these are often used mechanically. Paragraphing is present but the final paragraph is incomplete, which disrupts the logical flow. The progression of ideas is hindered by the abrupt ending and the lack of a fully developed argument. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall structure feels fragmented. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by fully developed supporting points that lead naturally to a conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'To explain it that' and 'To justify it that' are unnatural and indicate a lack of flexibility. There are also errors in word formation, such as 'self employment are' instead of 'self-employment is'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey basic meaning, it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You should aim to use more academic collocations and avoid repeating the same phrases to introduce your points. Expanding your vocabulary related to business and employment would be highly beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'self employment are' and 'self employed person have'. Articles are frequently missing or misused, and sentence structures are often simple or repetitive. While there is an attempt at complex sentences, they are often punctuated incorrectly or contain errors in construction. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures and proofreading for common errors like pluralization and verb agreement before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
