Student answer (Band 8.0)

Nowadays, an increasing number of people are choosing self-employment over working for established companies or organisations. Although being one’s own boss can offer greater freedom and flexibility, it also entails several significant disadvantages, particularly financial insecurity and increased personal responsibility.

The most obvious drawback of self-employment is the lack of a stable and predictable income. Unlike salaried employees, self-employed individuals may not receive a fixed amount of money every month. Their earnings can fluctuate considerably depending on market conditions, customer demand and the success of their business. During periods of economic uncertainty, for instance, a small business owner may struggle to attract clients and could consequently face serious financial difficulties. Furthermore, self-employed people generally have to cover business expenses themselves, including rent, equipment, insurance and marketing costs, which can substantially reduce their actual income.

Another major disadvantage is the considerable level of responsibility and pressure involved. Employees can usually focus on their specific duties while other departments handle accounting, recruitment, marketing and administration. By contrast, self-employed individuals often have to manage several aspects of their work simultaneously. A freelance designer, for example, may need to find clients, negotiate contracts, complete projects, deal with taxes and maintain professional relationships, all without the support of a dedicated team. This can result in longer working hours and considerable stress, making it difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

In addition, self-employment may provide fewer employment benefits. Company employees often have access to paid holidays, sick leave, employer-sponsored insurance and retirement contributions, whereas self-employed workers are generally responsible for arranging and funding these benefits themselves. This can make self-employment particularly challenging in the event of illness or during periods when they are unable to work.

In conclusion, while self-employment can provide independence and flexibility, it comes with substantial disadvantages. Unpredictable income, greater responsibility, work-related stress and limited employment benefits can make it considerably less secure than traditional employment. Therefore, anyone considering self-employment should carefully evaluate these risks before making such a career decision.
