Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary society, there is an ongoing debate whether to serve in a firm or to build one on your own. A favorable environment is an essential condition for not only employees but also for employers. This essay will elucidate both choices and the repercussions of them.

There are a plethora of reasons why individuals choose to be self-employed in lieu of being a worker in someone else's organisation. Firstly, being the boss of your own provides you the privilege of working on your own pace rather than following the senior's orders. To illustrate, a CEO of a company will manage everything according to his plans keeping in view the opinions of his working partners. Moreover, an entrepreneur can do remote jobs from home and this will provide him the sense of flexibility. As a result, he will work diligently and will be free from the pressure of deadlines. For instance, working from home can save us a lot of time and effort. In the case of any unfavorable condition, we can submit our project via email.

This will be the epitome of comfortable working without being stressful and overwhelming.

Contrarily, The cons of this choice are inevitable. The result of a survey predicts that a person who got promoted from the position of an employee to a manager, he will become arrogant and will be ego-centered. They become strict and lose their courtesy. Furthermore, a person who does not care about punctuality will hire workers who will also become careless. However, the manager of a firm requires you to be meticulous and consistent. A case in point is that a pupil who was monotonous in his learning age will become inconsistent and will jeopardize his regularity.

To conclude, the pros and cons of this issue are somehow manageable. Although working without pressure will be flexible, it will not always give the desired consequence. It considerably depends on the person how he will deal with these circumstances.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for self-employment and potential disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. The explanation of why people choose self-employment is clear, but the discussion of disadvantages is somewhat tangential. Instead of focusing on the inherent risks of self-employment (e.g., financial instability, lack of benefits, or long hours), the essay focuses on the personality changes of managers, which is not a direct disadvantage of being self-employed. The argument regarding the 'pupil' is also unclear and lacks relevance to the topic. To improve, ensure that the disadvantages discussed are directly linked to the experience of the self-employed individual.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Contrarily', and 'To conclude' are used to signal the progression of ideas. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and logical leaps, particularly in the second body paragraph where the transition from 'manager' to 'pupil' is confusing. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary, including some sophisticated items like 'contemporary society', 'plethora', 'epitome', and 'meticulous'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'serve in a firm' (work for a firm), 'monotonous in his learning age' (likely meaning 'inconsistent' or 'undisciplined'), and 'jeopardize his regularity'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise usage of academic vocabulary to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a person who got promoted... he will become' (redundant subject), 'working on your own pace' (at your own pace), and 'the pros and cons of this issue are somehow manageable'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. While the student attempts complex structures, the frequency of errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage would be beneficial.
