Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both why people choose self-employment (such as flexibility, career control, and avoiding workplace stress) and the potential disadvantages (such as financial risk, investment loss, and family pressure). However, the development of these ideas is frequently hampered by poor expression and lack of clarity. While the writer's position is discernible throughout the essay, the arguments are often superficial and rely on vague generalisations rather than fully articulated reasoning or concrete personal examples. Consequently, the task achievement aligns best with Band 5.5, as it meets the basic requirements of addressing both prompt questions, but the ideas remain under-developed and difficult to fully appreciate due to the unclear phrasing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, attempting to separate the introduction, body paragraphs addressing advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression is severely disrupted by grammatical breakdown and poor cohesive devices. Phrases such as 'this is mainly due to fact that' and 'consequence, it poper regulations' demonstrate inadequate and inaccurate control of cohesion. Furthermore, referencing is frequently unclear, leaving the reader to guess the connections between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is mechanical and repetitive. This level of organisation and cohesive control corresponds to a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent word-choice errors that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'self employment is better than working in a company has became', 'feel fee to do own work', and 'getting hole loss'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'substantal weigth', 'uninfended compalication', and 'develoopment region', but these are marred by severe spelling mistakes and incorrect collocations. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors causing difficulty for the reader at times, placing this firmly at Band 4.5 to 5.0; a Band 5.0 is awarded as the core message can ultimately be deciphered.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, and the text is heavily populated with basic and complex sentence structures that are structurally faulty. Frequent errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation are present throughout the essay, such as 'it might causes for bulidling', 'people may faces alot of work load', and 'coula outweigh'. There are very few error-free sentences, and the high frequency of grammatical mistakes often distorts the intended meaning and causes significant difficulty for the reader. This performance aligns directly with the Band 4.5 descriptors, though a Band 5.0 is granted as there are occasional simple structures that are controlled.
