Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address all parts of the prompt by discussing both the reasons why people choose self-employment and its potential disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times unclear. While the student mentions gaining knowledge and starting a business, the explanations remain superficial. For instance, the example provided about a friend becoming a software engineer and then changing their mind lacks clear logical connection to self-employment benefits. Similarly, the disadvantage section mentions a sister running a meat shop and experiencing financial loss, which touches on the prompt but lacks clear elaboration. Overall, the response addresses the task partially, corresponding to the Band 5 descriptor where ideas are limited and under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, there is a lack of overall progression and logical flow. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' with faulty grammatical integration. Referencing is often unclear, particularly pronouns like 'he' referring to female subjects ('my sister... but he kept'). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is weak, resulting in a somewhat disjointed reading experience that aligns best with the Band 4 to 5 range, leaning towards a Band 4.5 due to the structural attempt, but officially scored at 4.0 because information and ideas are not arranged cohesively enough for a stable Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms such as 'business', 'money', and 'knowledge'. There are numerous word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'built' instead of 'build', 'oraganisation', 'eassy', 'empolyes', and 'loss' instead of 'lost'. These lexical limitations and errors strain the reader and frequently impede communication, reflecting the characteristics of the Band 4 descriptor where vocabulary is basic and repetitive, and errors strain the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The essay demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex structures that are heavily flawed, such as 'Nowadays many people are choosing the self-employed to built a huge company or oraganisation in their life and individuals are not thinking to do work...' Grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, incorrect verb forms ('She don't know to how to run'), and missing articles. These persistent errors frequently distort meaning and cause significant difficulty for the reader, placing the response squarely within the Band 4 descriptor.
