Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address all parts of the prompt, discussing why people choose to be self-employed and mentioning disadvantages. However, the treatment of the task is limited and ideas are inadequately developed. For instance, the writer states that self-employed people 'enjoy their lives fully' and 'donot worries about their future' without providing specific explanations or relevant examples to support these assertions. The position is also confused by repetitive phrasing and some contradictions, such as discussing advantages in the conclusion while attempting to introduce new points like being 'well educated.' Overall, the response addresses the task only partially, placing it firmly at this level of achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some overall organization with clear paragraph breaks used to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and ideas within paragraphs often jump abruptly without smooth logical transitions. Cohesive devices are used repetitively and sometimes mechanically, such as the frequent reliance on 'For instance' and 'As a result,' which do not always connect ideas logically. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the confusing pronoun shifts between 'they' and 'we' within the same arguments. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow needs considerable strengthening to achieve a higher standard.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple phrases such as 'self employed,' 'good,' 'life,' and 'business man.' There are frequent spelling and word-form errors that strain the reader and impede smooth communication, such as 'belived,' 'asspects,' 'opnion,' 'bussy,' and 'prespectives.' The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are marred by inaccurate collocations and word choices, such as 'buisness ruined' and 'mentaly and physicaly healthy.' The overall lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for expressing very basic ideas about employment.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex or compound forms that are often faulty. There are persistent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'self employed has a big cause' and 'this issue has increasingly significant.' Punctuation and article usage are also problematic throughout the text, featuring incorrect spacing around commas and missing articles. These frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted control of basic grammatical patterns.
