Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main parts of the prompt, exploring why people choose self-employment, such as freedom, travel, and technology, as well as disadvantages like instability, financial risk, and long hours. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed, lacking sufficient supporting details or specific examples from personal experience. Furthermore, the response falls short of the minimum length requirement, containing 249 words, which includes 15 words copied directly from the task prompt that were not counted. To reach a higher level, the writer must fully develop all aspects of the task with extended explanations and ensure the word count exceeds the 250-word minimum.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation visible, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the text is divided into only two dense blocks that merge distinct ideas together, such as transitioning abruptly between the causes of self-employment and the advantages of technology. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, with faulty referencing such as 'there life' and 'these difficult journey'. To improve, the writer needs to logically structure the response into distinct introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs, while employing a wider and more accurate range of cohesive ties to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'peoples', 'employe', 'successfull', and 'condiiton'. The writer attempts some less common phrasing, such as 'sourcing from china can be done on a mobile phone' and 'digital products can be sold globally', but these lack precision. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range, eliminate basic spelling mistakes, and use word forms and collocations more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by basic conjunctions or commas. Attempts at complex sentence forms are frequently faulty, leading to run-on sentences and punctuation errors, such as 'the case is People want to travel more, they want freedom in there life' and 'a harsh truth about self-employed is, its difficult from being a simple employe to a organization'. Frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and articles are present throughout. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate a reliable mix of complex structures and maintain better grammatical control over basic sentence patterns.
