Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by discussing why people choose self-employment, such as the influence of technology and avoiding workplace pressure, and touches upon disadvantages like financial pressure. However, the development of these ideas remains limited and under-developed. For example, the claim that social influencers prompt their followers to copy them and start a business is stated without sufficient elaboration or concrete support. The student attempts to cover all parts of the prompt, but the position is not always clearly sustained throughout, and some arguments blur together. To move to a higher band, the ideas need to be extended with deeper explanations and clearer, fully supported examples rather than relying on brief, generalised assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the essay, with a clear introduction and conclusion, and paragraphs are used to separate the different aspects of the prompt. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate, repetitive, or poorly managed, as seen in the frequent use of transition phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' which do not always logically introduce contrasting points. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'which impacts on their health' where the exact antecedent is muddled. To improve cohesion, the writer needs to ensure that sentences flow naturally into one another with more precise logical links and clearer referencing throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to communicate the central theme. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Instances such as 'espacially', 'todays generations people', 'self-employess', 'demerites', and 'knowladge' highlight basic control issues with spelling and derivation. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but inaccurate collocations and incorrect forms prevent the language from being precise. To achieve a higher score, a wider and more accurate range of vocabulary must be deployed with correct word formation and appropriate academic style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in grammar across the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('self-employed make people'), article usage ('in various sectors employess worked'), and awkward prepositional patterns. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader in grasping the exact meaning of certain sentences. To improve in this area, the writer needs to focus on mastering basic sentence mechanics, ensuring correct verb forms, and reducing the frequency of structural errors when attempting more complex clauses.
