Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table gave information on the number of visitors Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after refurbished. However the chart showed the results of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit during the same two periods.

Overall, the graph demonstrated the total number of the guests, whereas the two pie charts illustrated the results of surveys of visitor satisfaction.

During the year before refurbishement people were 74000, nevertheless, during the year after the refurbishement, the number of visitors increased to 92000.

Furthermore, the first chart highlighted details of the year before refurbishement. Visitors who were dissatisfied had the highest percentage of 40. Followed by 30% of people who got satisfied with the museum. Moreover, 10% was on individuals who became very dissatisfied. Some visitors who reached the range of 15% were very satisfied. Therefore, the least percentage which is 5 is on no response, nothing was recorded on the reaction of the commuters.

Additionally, the second circular chart gave information on the year after the refurbishement where the highest percentage of the guests were satisfied as compared to the previous year. Visitors who were very satisfied were at 35%. The dissatisfied rate decreased to 15%. At the column of no response remained at 5%.

In conclusion, the three images strictly demonstrated data on the visitors who took a visit to Ashdown Museum.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main elements of the task and report the visitor totals accurately: 74,000 before refurbishment and 92,000 afterwards. You also identify the key shift from dissatisfaction being the largest group before refurbishment (40%) to satisfaction leading afterwards (40%), and note that dissatisfaction fell to 15%. This gives the response a clear overview of the broad changes. However, some details are incomplete: the after-refurbishment figures for very dissatisfied visitors and no response are not both clearly reported, and the comparison between the two periods could be developed more systematically. The final sentence merely restates that the visuals show visitor data rather than adding a useful summary. More precise coverage of the main categories would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is divided into paragraphs and generally moves from an introduction to an overview, then to the two survey periods. This provides some organisation, and transitions such as “Furthermore” and “Additionally” help signal the shift between charts. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the overview repeats that the visuals show visitor numbers and survey results, while the conclusion adds little. Some linking is mechanical, and “Therefore” does not express a clear logical relationship in the sentence about the smallest category. Grouping the satisfaction figures into direct before-and-after comparisons, rather than describing each chart separately, would create a clearer progression and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the visuals, including “increased,” “dissatisfied,” “percentage,” and “decreased,” so the main information is understandable. There is also some attempt to vary wording, for example “guests” and “individuals.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “people were 74000” does not clearly describe a visitor total, “got satisfied” is an awkward collocation, and “circular chart” is less appropriate than the standard term “pie chart.” “Commuters” is also unsuitable for museum visitors. Spelling errors such as “refurbishement” recur. Aim for precise, conventional chart-description vocabulary rather than replacing terms with loosely related synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “where” and “who,” and most of the intended meaning can be followed. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns are noticeable. For example, “the number of visitors Ashdown Museum” is missing a necessary preposition, and “during the year after refurbished” lacks a correctly formed passive construction. “Visitors who were dissatisfied had the highest percentage of 40” is also structurally awkward, while “At the column of no response remained at 5%” is not a complete, well-formed sentence. Work on articles, prepositions, and complete clause structures, and check punctuation around introductory phrases to make the comparisons easier to read.
