Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table tells the number of people give a visit to the Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbishment while the pie chat displays the satisfication level of visitors accounted thorugh surveys during these period.

The table shows the increased number of visitors to the museum after the refurbishment. In parallel, there is overall 30 percent increase in the satisfactory ratio of visitors.

Before redevelopment, total 74,000 people visit the museum. From which 50 percent people says they are not satisfied with the Ashdown Museum from which 10 pecent people were highly disappointed. Out of 100 total of 45 show the satisfaction overall.

These stats changed after the refurbishment, as we can see total increase of 18,000 in visitors with 30 percent decline in the dissatification rate. 5 percent of visitors didn't take part in the survey. Also there is around double increase in the satidication level.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main overall changes: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and satisfaction improved after refurbishment. However, several survey figures are inaccurate or unclear. Before refurbishment, 50% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, but only 10% were very dissatisfied; the 45% figure refers to satisfied and very satisfied visitors combined, not “45 show the satisfaction overall” as written. After refurbishment, dissatisfaction fell from 50% to 20%, a 30-percentage-point decrease, while satisfaction rose from 45% to 75%. The claim of a “30 percent increase” in satisfaction is therefore misleading, and “around double” understates the change. The response is also below the 150-word minimum: 141 words, with 12 copied prompt words excluded. Include a clearer overview and report the key proportions precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, a summary of the overall changes, and separate comments on the two periods. Linking phrases such as “In parallel” and “These stats changed after the refurbishment” help signal comparison. However, progression is not consistently clear because some sentences combine figures without explaining how they relate. For example, “From which 50 percent people says…” is difficult to follow, and “Out of 100 total of 45 show the satisfaction overall” does not clearly identify the two satisfaction categories being combined. The repeated use of “from which” also weakens cohesion. Organise the details by comparing satisfaction and dissatisfaction across both years, and use clear references such as “the combined satisfied groups” to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt task-relevant vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “satisfaction level,” “dissatisfaction rate,” and “decline,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make parts difficult to understand. Examples include “pie chat” for “pie chart,” “satisfication,” “dissatification,” and “satidication.” Phrases such as “give a visit,” “satisfactory ratio,” and “highly disappointed” are also unnatural or imprecise for describing survey categories. Use the chart’s labels consistently—“satisfied,” “very satisfied,” “dissatisfied,” and “very dissatisfied”—and choose precise terms such as “proportion” or “percentage” when reporting survey results.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer sentence forms, including “The table tells… while the pie chart displays…” and “These stats changed after the refurbishment, as we can see…”. However, control is inconsistent, and errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “during the year before and the year after it was refurbishment” has an incorrect clause structure, while “Before redevelopment, total 74,000 people visit” lacks an article and uses an inappropriate verb form. In “50 percent people says,” the noun phrase and subject–verb agreement are faulty. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention, particularly in the long sentence beginning “From which…”. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build clear sentences around one comparison at a time.
