Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the proportion of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the before and after year of refurbished. The data that chart provide from the result of surveys shows how satisfied the visitors were during both the times.
Overall, the number of visitors dramatically increased after the refurbishment, subsequently results of surveys also shows number of satisfied visitors increased while decline in dissatisfied visitors can be noted in the year after refurbishment, meanwhile no response level stayed the same in both years.
The most noticeable change can be observed in the proportion of very satisfied visitor which was only 15% in the year before refurbishment but after refurbishment numbers rise in this category by 35%. On the other hand, proportion of satisfied visitor were 30% before and now it increased into 40% after the refurbishment.
Furthermore, huge decreased can be seen in the proportion of dissatisfied visitors with 40% before and 15% after refurbishment. Next, very dissatisfied numbers also went down, it was 10% before and 5% after the year of refurbishment. Lastly the proportion of no response of survey remained same 5% in both the time periods, while before refurbishment total number of visitors were 74,000 and after refurbishment it increased to 92,000 visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers the main features of both the visitor total and the satisfaction surveys, and the figures reported are accurate: visitors rose from 74,000 to 92,000, satisfaction increased, dissatisfaction fell, and non-response remained at 5%. The overview clearly identifies these broad trends, while the body gives useful comparisons across all five survey categories. This makes the report well focused and sufficiently supported. To strengthen it further, make the opening more precise: the visuals are a table and two pie charts, not simply “the pie chart,” and “during the before and after year of refurbished” obscures the time periods. The overview could also state more directly that satisfied responses became the largest group after refurbishment, while dissatisfaction had been the largest beforehand.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs comparing the survey categories and visitor totals. The sequence from positive responses to negative responses is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “Furthermore,” and “Lastly” help signal comparisons. However, some connections feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Furthermore,” “Next,” and “Lastly.” The final sentence also combines the unchanged non-response figure with the visitor totals, making the paragraph’s focus less clear. Use more precise referencing and group related information—for example, discuss both positive categories together, then both negative categories, and place the visitor total in a separate comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for describing the data, with relevant terms such as “proportion,” “increased,” “decline,” and “remained the same.” The writer also attempts more emphatic language, including “dramatically” and “huge decreased,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Huge decreased” should be “a substantial decrease,” and “numbers rise in this category by 35%” is misleading because the figure is 35%, rather than an increase of 35 percentage points. There is also repetition of “proportion” and “visitors.” Greater precision in terms such as “share,” “percentage,” and “responses” would improve flexibility. Use “survey results” rather than “results of surveys” where a more concise expression is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause beginning “which was only 15%.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the data that chart provide” has incorrect subject–verb agreement and an unclear clause; “results of surveys also shows” should use a plural verb; and “proportion of satisfied visitor were” has agreement and singular/plural problems. The opening phrase “during the before and after year” also has an incorrect grammatical construction. Work on articles, plural nouns, and matching verbs to their subjects, and check sentence boundaries: the overview’s long sentence would be clearer if divided into two accurately punctuated sentences.
