IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table displays the total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum before and after the year it was redeveloped, while the pie charts illustrate the results of surveys of visitor satisfaction.

Overall, the large number of people visited the museum and they were more satisfied after refurbishment. While the number of people who did not give any response remain unchanged in both years.

Regarding total number of visitors, 74,000 visitors visited the Ashdown Museum during the year before refurbishment. However, the number of visitors increased to 92,000 during the year after redevelopment.

In terms of visitor satisfaction, only 15% of the visitors were very satisfied but it is increased to 35% by the year after reconstruction. The satisfactory rate of visitors experienced a growth of 10%, while the people who were dissatisfied were decreased from 40% to 15%. The rate of very disappointed visitors and those who did not give any response were 10% and 5%, repectively before updating museum. However, their rate became equal by the year after reconstruction, both with 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You cover both the visitor total and the satisfaction surveys, and the main comparisons are accurate: attendance rose from 74,000 to 92,000, very satisfied responses increased from 15% to 35%, and dissatisfaction fell from 40% to 15%. Your overview also identifies the unchanged 5% with no response. This gives the report a clear account of the principal trends. To make the overview more precise, state explicitly that positive satisfaction (satisfied or very satisfied) became the majority after refurbishment, while dissatisfaction was the dominant response beforehand. The phrase “the large number of people” is vague and does not convey the scale or direction of the attendance change as effectively as the figures you provide later. Overall, the task is addressed clearly, with only some scope to sharpen the synthesis of the key features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response follows a sensible sequence: an introduction, an overview, then separate discussion of attendance and satisfaction. This makes the information easy to locate, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Regarding,” and “In terms of” help signal the stages of the report. Comparisons are generally grouped appropriately, including the paired changes in satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Some connections are less smooth: “However” introduces the rise in attendance even though the contrast is not clearly established, and the final sentence combines two categories without a particularly clear transition. More direct links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile” would clarify relationships between figures. The organisation is clear throughout, but cohesion could be more flexible and precise rather than relying on a small set of formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use enough task-related vocabulary to report the data, including “total number of visitors,” “visitor satisfaction,” “increased,” and “decreased.” There is also some attempt to vary wording through “redeveloped,” “reconstruction,” and “updating.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: “satisfactory rate” is not the usual term for the share who were satisfied, and “very disappointed visitors” does not accurately name the chart category “very dissatisfied.” “Large number” is also imprecise, while “repectively” contains a spelling error. Repeating “visitors” and “year after reconstruction” limits flexibility. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, such as “the proportion of respondents” and “following refurbishment.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the opening sentence with “while” and comparisons using “from … to ….” Most of the data remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In “the number of people who did not give any response remain unchanged,” the verb should agree with the singular subject (“remained”), and the past tense is needed. “Only 15% … were very satisfied but it is increased” has an unclear pronoun and an incorrect verb form; use “this figure increased.” The phrase “Regarding total number” also needs an article (“the total number”), and “were decreased” is an awkward passive construction where “fell” would be grammatically cleaner. Greater control of tense, agreement, and sentence construction would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
