Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main features: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and satisfaction improved after refurbishment. The overview identifies both trends, while the final sentence reports the after-refurbishment proportions accurately. However, some survey details are unclear or incomplete. In particular, “40% of the visitor feedback became much more positive” does not specify that 40% were satisfied after refurbishment; before refurbishment, 30% were satisfied and 15% very satisfied. The claim that satisfaction “flipped completely” also overstates the change, since 20% remained dissatisfied or very dissatisfied afterwards. The response is 129 words, below the 150-word minimum; 43 copied words from the task prompt were excluded. Add a fuller comparison of both survey periods and clarify the figures to develop the report more completely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an overview is followed by visitor totals and then survey findings. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “According to,” and “However” help signal the movement between points. However, the progression within the survey paragraph is not always clear. The sentence about “40% of the visitor feedback” is difficult to connect to the earlier figure of 40% dissatisfied, and “this flipped completely” has an unclear reference. The semicolon after “museum” also interrupts the sentence rather than joining its ideas effectively. Use separate, clearly ordered comparisons for the before and after results, and make each reference explicit—for example, state which satisfaction categories changed and by how much.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” “modernized,” and “reported feeling satisfied.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt some variation with “remodeling” and “updates.” However, several word choices or combinations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “the ratio of 5% people,” “visitor feedback became much more positive,” and “did not even response.” “Flipped completely” is also too strong for a change that left some visitors dissatisfied. Aim for precise chart-reporting language and consistent terminology rather than switching among “refurbishment,” “remodeling,” “updates,” and “modernized.” More accurate collocations would make the comparisons clearer and more formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “However” and the clause beginning “after the museum was modernized.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “the total number of visitors were 74,000” has subject–verb disagreement, and “most of the visitors found more satisfied” is missing a grammatical structure such as “were more satisfied.” In “before the remodeling of museum;” the article and punctuation are problematic, while “there were large number” needs an article. Review agreement with singular subjects, verb patterns after “find,” and article use. More consistently accurate sentence construction would strengthen the report.
