IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The table illustrates the comparison between the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the two years before and after the renovation. They were asked about their satisfaction with their visit in both years, and the survey results are visualised in the chart.
Overall, a huge number of visitors visited the museum after the refurbishment. The visitors are much more satisfied than before the renovation. The ratio of dissatisfaction has declined to a great extent.
The Satisfaction percentage increased from 30 to 40 per cent in a year after the refurbishment. Before the renovation, 15 per cent of visitors were highly satisfied, and the percentage increased to 35 per cent after the refurbishment. Similarly, the dissatisfaction percentage has declined from 40 to 15 per cent. Visitors with abstentions showed the same result before and after the renovation; the percentage is 5. Visitors with high dissatisfaction plummeted from 10 to 5 per cent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall changes: visitor numbers rose after refurbishment, satisfaction improved, and dissatisfaction fell. Several figures are accurately reported, including the rise in very satisfied visitors from 15% to 35%, the fall in dissatisfied visitors from 40% to 15%, and the unchanged 5% giving no response. However, the overview is broad, and the visitor total is not quantified: it increased from 74,000 to 92,000. The account also omits the increase in the satisfied category from 30% to 40%, despite referring to it, and does not clearly distinguish the two satisfaction categories. To strengthen the response, report the visitor totals and give a more complete, precise comparison of the survey results, including the fall in very dissatisfied responses from 10% to 5%.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph reporting survey details. Its progression from visitor numbers and general satisfaction to individual categories is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall” and “Similarly” help connect the information. Some cohesion is less effective because the introduction repeats the task wording without adding much, and the overview’s “The visitors” and “The ratio” are not very precise references. The final paragraph also moves through categories without a particularly clear grouping. Organise the details into positive responses and negative responses, and use explicit labels such as “the proportion who were satisfied” to make comparisons more cohesive and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing change, including “increased,” “declined,” and “plummeted,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some imprecise or awkward choices that limit flexibility and naturalness. “A huge number of visitors visited” is repetitive and does not convey the specific increase, while “abstentions” is not an appropriate term for survey respondents who gave no response. “The Satisfaction percentage” is also an unnatural label, and “high dissatisfaction” is less precise than the chart category “very dissatisfied.” Prefer concise, conventional reporting language and use the chart’s categories consistently. This would make the comparisons sound more accurate and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the information remains understandable. For example, the opening sentence combines the comparison with the time period, while “Visitors with abstentions showed the same result before and after the renovation” communicates an unchanged figure. Some grammatical choices are less controlled: “The visitors are much more satisfied than before” shifts into the present tense when describing past survey results, and “The Satisfaction percentage increased from 30 to 40 per cent in a year after” has an awkward time phrase and unclear construction. The overview also uses “The ratio of dissatisfaction,” which is grammatically possible but does not clearly express the measured proportion. Keep past-tense reporting consistent and build comparisons with clear subjects and time references.
