Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table provides the data about the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after refurbishment. The other pie charts show the result of surveys about the satisfaction of their visit, in same two year.

Overall, the number of visitors were more after it was refurbished. The proportion satisfied and very satisfied visitors increased while the proportion of dissatisfied visitors fell after refurbishment.

The total number of visitors to Ashdown museum before and after refurbishment was 166,000. Before refurbishment, 74,000 people visited that museum while the number of visitors increased by 18,000 after it was refurbished.

Regarding the visitors satisfaction, 15% and 30% of them were very satisfied and satisfied with the museum before refurbishment, whereas the proportion increased to 35% and 40% after refurbishment. The percentage of visitors who were dissatisfied before were 40%, but after refurbishment, it had fallen by 25%. 5% of them didnot respond to the survey in both year. Before very dissatisfied visitors were 10%, which reduced to 5% after it was refurbished.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address the main parts of the task and give a clear overview: visitor numbers rose, satisfaction increased, and dissatisfaction declined. Most figures are reported accurately, including the 74,000 visitors before refurbishment and the satisfaction percentages. However, the sentence saying the total number of visitors “was 166,000” is misleading: 166,000 is the combined total across both years, not the figure for either year. Also, saying dissatisfaction “fell by 25%” is ambiguous; it fell by 25 percentage points, from 40% to 15%. Clarifying these comparisons and distinguishing the two annual totals would make the data reporting more precise and consistently well supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to visitor numbers and survey results. This gives the reader a logical route through the information, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “whereas,” and “Regarding” help signal relationships. To make the progression more fluent, avoid repeating the same before-and-after framing and connect related figures more smoothly. For example, the visitor totals could be reported together without the confusing “166,000” sentence, followed by a concise comparison of the satisfaction categories. Some references, such as “it” in “after it was refurbished,” are also less precise than naming the museum or refurbishment directly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “dissatisfied,” “refurbishment,” and “increased,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are attempts at more formal reporting language, but some choices are repetitive or imprecise: “the data about” is less natural than “data on,” and “the result of surveys about the satisfaction of their visit” is awkward. “The number of visitors were more” also uses an unsuitable expression for describing a rise. Check spelling and spacing in “Ashdown museum” and “didnot”; these reduce accuracy, although they do not prevent understanding. More precise collocations for describing survey results and changes would strengthen the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some more developed structures, including the contrast in “whereas the proportion increased” and the clause beginning “who were dissatisfied.” However, several grammatical errors remain. In “the number of visitors were more,” the singular subject “number” requires “was,” and the comparison should be expressed with a verb such as “rose.” The phrase “in same two year” is missing an article and has an incorrect plural form; “in the same two years” would be grammatical. In “the percentage … before were 40%,” the subject is singular, so use “was.” Review agreement, articles, and plural forms, and aim for more consistently accurate complex sentences.
