IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The table demonstrates the number of people who visited Ashdown Museum, before and after it was renovated. Along with that, there is a pie chart which shows the results of surveys about how satisfied and dissaftisfied were the visitors.
Looking at the table, it illustrates that the number of visitors, before the museum was revamped, stood at 74,000. After the restoration of the museum, the number of sightseers elevated to 92,000. It means that the restoration of museum had led to increased number of visitors.
Along with table, there is a pie-chart. It shows the results of surveys of visitor satisfaction level. Before fixing of museum, only 15 percent of people were pretty much satisfied, and 30 percent were satisfied only. A big chunk of pie-chart distributes about 40 percent of very dissatisfied sighseers, 10 percent dissatisfied, and 5 percent visitors showed no response.
After the renovation, the satisfaction level of visitors enhanced. Very satisfied customers percentage elevated upto 35 percent, and 40 percent were satisfied.
The very dissatisfied visitors percentage decreased upto 5 percent, dissatisfied upto 15 percent, and again 5 percent visitors showed no response. It means the reconditioning of museum had a great impact on satisfaction level of visitor.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You report the main figures accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and the satisfaction categories shifted toward more positive responses after refurbishment. The overview that satisfaction improved is relevant and supported by the figures. However, the account is not fully precise: before refurbishment, 40% were dissatisfied and 10% very dissatisfied, but you reverse these categories by describing 40% as “very dissatisfied” and 10% as “dissatisfied.” The opening also calls the visual a pie chart, although the task presents survey charts, and the claim that refurbishment “had led to” the increase suggests causation that the data alone cannot establish. More clearly distinguish the two dissatisfaction categories and summarise the overall contrast before listing details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the visuals, describes visitor totals, and then compares survey results before and after refurbishment. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and phrases such as “After the renovation” make the time comparison easy to follow. However, linking is somewhat repetitive and mechanical, particularly the repeated “Along with” and “It means that” constructions. The final paragraph also presents several figures in a sequence without a strong comparison between the two periods, while “The very dissatisfied visitors percentage decreased…” has an unclear reference to the earlier figure. Use a concise overview and organise the survey details around the main shift from negative to positive responses, with clearer references to each period.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary to describe change, including “stood at,” “elevated,” “decreased,” and “renovation.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a formal data summary. “Sightseers” is not the most suitable term for museum visitors, “pretty much satisfied” is informal, and “a big chunk of pie-chart distributes” is an awkward description. There are also spelling errors in “dissaftisfied” and “sighseers,” and “upto” should be written as two words. Repeated alternatives for refurbishment, such as “fixing,” “restoration,” and “reconditioning,” do not always fit the context. Prefer precise, neutral terms such as “visitors,” “proportion,” and “rose/fell,” and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “It means that the restoration of museum had led to increased number of visitors.” The main comparisons are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles are missing in phrases such as “the restoration of museum” and “increased number of visitors”; “the satisfaction level of visitors enhanced” also needs a more natural grammatical construction. In “The very dissatisfied visitors percentage decreased upto 5 percent,” the possessive relationship is unclear, and the sentence structure is awkward. The response relies heavily on short statements and repeated sentence patterns, so try combining related figures with accurate clauses, for example, “The proportion who were very dissatisfied fell from 10% to 5%.” Check articles, possessives, and verb patterns when revising.
