IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The surveys represent the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum in the year before and after refurbishment. The chart illustrates the mood of the visitors according to the survey.
If we look at the chart, we can see that the ratio of people were the highest that were dissatisfied in the year before refurbishment and the highest number of people were satisfied in the year after refurbishment.
However, the number of people before refurbishment were 74,000 and after were 92,000. If we take clear look at the chart we can see that the percentage of 40 percent people in the both chart were changed from dissatisfied to satisfied. There is also a drastic change to the people that were very satisfied as comapred in two charts. However, the people with no responce remains the same.
In addition, the ratio of people decreased that were very dissatisfied in the year before and after refurbishment.
To conclude, we can say that the year before and after had a great increase to people's satisfaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the data, including the visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the statement 'the percentage of 40 percent people in the both chart were changed' is unclear and mathematically confusing. While you identify the increase in visitor numbers and the shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction, the report lacks a more precise breakdown of the data categories (e.g., 'very satisfied' vs 'satisfied'). To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more accurate and that you clearly distinguish between raw numbers and percentages, as these were conflated in your description.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. Phrases like 'If we look at the chart' and 'If we take clear look at the chart' are repetitive and do not effectively guide the reader through the data. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic or slightly misused, such as the transition 'However' used to introduce a point that is not necessarily a contrast to the previous sentence. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely on simple descriptors like 'highest number' and 'drastic change'. There are also some errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'no responce' (response) and 'comapred' (compared). The phrase 'ratio of people' is used repeatedly, which limits the lexical range. To improve, try to incorporate more varied vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'proportion', 'significant increase', or 'a marked shift', and ensure careful proofreading for spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For instance, 'the ratio of people were the highest that were dissatisfied' is syntactically awkward. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the number of people... were' (should be 'was') and 'the percentage of 40 percent people... were changed'. While the meaning is generally understandable, these recurring errors prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage would be beneficial.
