IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The table given provides data on the number of people visiting a museum one year before and after a few developments were made; whereas the pie charts show the proportions of the satisfaction levels of the visitors in the two years.
Overall, more number of people visited the Ashdown Museum after it was refurbished compared to before. Before renovations of the museum majority of people reported dissatisfaction in their visit, while in the year after most people were happy with their experience.
A year before it was modernized 74,000 visited the museum. However, this number of people increased to 92,000 in the following year after the developments. Less people visited the museum before improvements were made because majority of those who visited did not have a satisfying experience. 40% of the 72,000 people were disappointed with their visit, followed by 30% of individuals feeling satisfied. Only 15% felt completely content visiting the Ashdown museum, followed by 10% being extremely unhappy and 5% with no response.
However, people visiting the museum a year after the renovations had different responses. 40% of the visitors reported satisfaction, followed closely by 35% feeling very pleased with their visit. Those who had a dissappointing experience made up a very small portion of the visitors. 15% of the 92,000 people were very disappointed. This was succeeded by those who were very dissatisfied and those who did not respond, each response with only a 5% share.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You included the key figures for visitor numbers and satisfaction levels for both years. However, there is a minor inconsistency in your data reporting: you mention '40% of the 72,000 people' in the first paragraph, but the table shows 74,000 visitors. Additionally, while you make comparisons, the analysis could be more integrated by directly contrasting the specific satisfaction categories between the two years rather than describing them in separate blocks. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Overall', and 'followed by' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the visitor numbers from the satisfaction survey results. The progression of ideas is clear, although some transitions between sentences could be smoother to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Referencing is generally accurate, and the information flows well from one point to the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'modernized', 'proportions of the satisfaction levels', and 'extremely unhappy' are used effectively. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'dissappointing', and some word choice issues, such as 'more number of people' (which should be 'a higher number of people'). While you use some less common items, the range is adequate rather than wide. Improving the precision of your collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'whereas' and 'while' to create contrast. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Less people visited' (should be 'Fewer people') and 'each response with only a 5% share' (which is a fragment). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally handled well. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and using a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy.
