Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table below illustrates the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The Pie charts present the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Overall, The people were 40% dissatisfied during the year before refurbishment, whereas this figure became 15% during the year after refurbishment. So, as we can say it declined by 25%. On the other hand, the proportion for satisfied during the year after refurbishment recorded the highest figure which was 36800.

As we can clearly see in the pie charts, the percentage for no response remained stable over time. On the other hand, the proportion rose 15% to 35% for very satisfied response. Furthermore, there were 10% visitors who opted for very dissatisfied before renovating and this became 5% after refurbishment. As it is apparently seen in the table that Number of visitors also increased from 74000 to 92000, during the year before refurbishment and during the year after refurbishment respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided relevant data from both the table and the pie charts. You covered the increase in visitor numbers and the shifts in satisfaction levels. However, the report lacks a clear, analytical overview of the data. While you mention some figures, the comparison between the two years could be more structured. For instance, you mention '36800' as the highest figure, but this is a raw number, whereas the pie charts show percentages; mixing these without clear context can be confusing. To improve, ensure you clearly distinguish between the total visitor numbers (table) and the satisfaction percentages (charts) to provide a more cohesive summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'On the other hand', but the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'So, as we can say it declined'. The transition between the table data and the pie chart data is somewhat abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words to connect your sentences more naturally and ensure that the progression of ideas from the general overview to specific details is smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey the main points. You use terms like 'refurbished', 'dissatisfied', and 'proportion' correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'the proportion for satisfied... recorded the highest figure' (which is slightly imprecise) and 'as it is apparently seen'. To improve, try to use more precise collocations and avoid repetitive structures. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and nouns related to data reporting will help you achieve a more professional and academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The people were 40% dissatisfied' (unnecessary article), 'the proportion rose 15% to 35% for very satisfied response' (missing article), and 'Number of visitors' (missing article). Additionally, the sentence 'So, as we can say it declined by 25%' is informal and grammatically awkward. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit your score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
