IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table illustrates number and satisfaction of visitors to the Ashdown museum before and after it got refurbished.

The Ashdown Museum, it had a decent amount of visitors even before the refurbishment, but it had a huge growth after the refurbishment from 74,000 to 92,000.

As for the results of the surveys of visitor satisfaction,

Not only the increase in people but the positive feed-back got better with both "Very satisfied" and "Satisfied" rate increased dramatically comparative to its previous results which were taken before the refurbishment.

Not only the positive feed back but negative results like "Dissatisfied" feedback diminished drastically from 40 to 15, also "Very dissatisfied" responses were also decreased.

Even though the positive and negative feedbacks got better yet there is no change in the percentage of "no response", they stayed same before and after the refurbishment.

Overall, the feedback of the surveys proved that the satisfaction level got way better in visitors after the refurbishment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the table and charts, identifying the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention the increase in 'Very satisfied' and 'Satisfied' ratings, you do not provide specific data points from the charts to support these claims, which is essential for a Band 7 or higher. The overview is present but lacks a clear synthesis of the relationship between the refurbishment and the improved visitor experience. To improve, ensure you include specific figures for all categories mentioned to provide a more comprehensive summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the visitor numbers to the survey results. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As for' and 'Overall', to guide the reader. However, the use of linking words is sometimes repetitive or slightly mechanical, such as the repeated use of 'Not only... but'. Paragraphing is present, but the structure within the paragraphs could be more fluid. Improving the variety of transition signals and ensuring smoother connections between sentences would help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'refurbished', 'diminished', and 'dramatically'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'positive feed-back got better' and 'the satisfaction level got way better'. These phrases are somewhat informal and lack the precision expected in an academic report. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding informal phrasing like 'way better'. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'The Ashdown Museum, it had...' (redundant subject) and 'they stayed same' (missing article). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in the first paragraph. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
