Student answer (Band 8.0)
The table illustrates the total number of visitors during the year before and after refurbishment, and the pie charts depicts the distributions of results of surveys of visitors satisfaction year before and year after refurbishment.
Overall, there was a surge in total number of visitors after refurbishment. The percentage accounted for dissatisfied people reduced, whereas the figures for very satisfied and satisfied rose significantly. The percentage of people who gave no response the survey remained the exact same in both time periods.
The total number of individuals who went to the Ashdown Museum before refurbishment was 74,000, which increased to 92,000 after the changes.
The proportion for unsatisfied visitors accounted for 40% of the total before refurbishment, which decreased significantly to 15% of the total. On the contrary, the figures comprised of satisfied visitors rose considerably from 30% to 40%, along with very satisfied people which stood at only 15% before the changes in the museum, increased to more than double at 35%. The proportion of the individuals who did not respond to the survey remained 5% in both the time periods.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. The data is accurately reported, and you have made relevant comparisons between the two periods. The overview is clear and provides a concise summary of the key findings. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use precise terminology when describing data, such as distinguishing between 'percentage' and 'proportion' more carefully, and ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories mentioned in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the general visitor numbers to the specific satisfaction survey results. You have used cohesive devices such as 'On the contrary' and 'whereas' effectively to contrast the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different types of information. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'the percentage accounted for dissatisfied people' could be phrased more naturally as 'the percentage of dissatisfied visitors'.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'surge in total number', 'rose significantly', and 'more than double' demonstrate a good command of descriptive language. There are occasional minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'the figures comprised of satisfied visitors', which would be better expressed as 'the figures for satisfied visitors'. However, these errors do not impede communication. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for 'increased' or 'decreased' to avoid repetition and add variety to your reporting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'the pie charts depicts' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'no response the survey' (missing preposition 'to'). Despite these, the meaning remains clear throughout. To achieve a higher score, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and consistent use of prepositions. The use of complex structures is evident, and with more attention to these minor grammatical details, your writing will be even more polished.
