IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given table provides us with the detail about the number of people visiting Ashdown Museum before and the year after its refurbishment, while the chart tells us about the survey where the visitors were asked about how satisfied they were during their tour to the museum. I will choose the key points from the provided data and summarise the information while comparing the results of surveys before and after the refurbishment.

In the year before refurbishment, the museum had a total of 74000 visitors. Out of all these visitors, 15% said they were very satisfied with their visit. 30% of the guests were satisfied while 40% of them were dissatisfied from their tour the museum.

On the other hand, during the year after the refurbishment of the museum, we had a significantly increased amount of people visiting the museum i.e 92000 visitors. Among all these tourers, 35% were very satisfied with the tour. 40% were satisfied while 15% of them were not satisfied with their tour.

Comparing these two results, we can see a significant increase in the number of satisfied visitors after the refurbishment of the museum.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the visitor numbers and the satisfaction levels for both periods. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you correctly identify the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction, you omit the 'neutral' category entirely, which is a key component of the provided chart. To reach a higher band, ensure all data categories are accounted for and provide a more detailed comparison of the trends. The overview is present but could be more analytical by highlighting the contrast between the high dissatisfaction before and the high satisfaction after the refurbishment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each time period, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two timeframes. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'Comparing these two results' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between the data points within paragraphs is smoother, rather than just listing percentages one after another.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, such as 'refurbishment', 'significantly increased', and 'dissatisfied'. However, there are some repetitive or slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'tourers' and 'tour to the museum'. The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding informal phrasing. For example, instead of 'the chart tells us', use 'the chart illustrates' or 'the data indicates'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'dissatisfied from their tour the museum' (should be 'dissatisfied with their tour of the museum') and 'the detail about the number' (should be 'details about the number'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You show control over basic structures, but more complex sentence forms are needed to demonstrate a wider range. Ensure you check for prepositions and article usage during your final review.
