IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Table and Pie charts compare the numbers and reviews of tourists, a year before and after renovation of Ashdown Museum.
We can see an increase in no of individuals who visited the Museum after its renovation. At the same time there is drop in the visitors who were very satisfied earlier.
There is a dramatic increase in tourists with a remark of satified form 15% to 35% after enauguration. And the same climb can also be seen with the visitors with a review of dissatisfied from 15% to 40% after renovation.
A huge drop can be seen in satisfied visitors from 40% to 30%. After the refurbishment there was 5% increase in individuals who visited it and was very dissatisfied. However ther is no change with the percentage of visitors who did not respond to survey.
After decrease in overall satisfaction level of visitors there was still an increament in visiotors after refurbishment of almost 12,000 visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the table and charts, including the increase in visitor numbers and the shifts in satisfaction levels. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention the increase in visitor numbers (from 74,000 to 92,000), you do not explicitly state the total figures for both years, which is a key requirement for a clear summary. The comparison between the two periods is present, but the report lacks a clear overview or 'summary' paragraph that synthesizes the trends. The data points are generally accurate, but the presentation could be more structured to highlight the most significant changes more effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into short paragraphs, but the logical progression is somewhat disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally mechanical (e.g., 'At the same time', 'However'). Some sentences feel like a list of data points rather than a cohesive analysis. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the connection between the 'decrease in overall satisfaction' and the 'increment in visitors' could be better linked to show the contrast. Paragraphing is present but could be used more effectively to group related information, such as separating the visitor numbers from the satisfaction survey results.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several spelling errors, such as 'satified' instead of 'satisfied', 'enauguration' instead of 'inauguration', 'increament' instead of 'increment', and 'visiotors' instead of 'visitors'. These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. You rely on basic descriptors like 'huge drop' and 'dramatic increase'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more sophisticated collocations and precise reporting verbs, such as 'a significant decline' or 'a notable surge', and ensure consistent spelling throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the flow of the writing. For example, 'no of individuals' should be 'number of individuals', and 'was very dissatisfied' lacks a clear subject in the context of the sentence. There are also issues with article usage (e.g., 'the survey' vs 'survey') and prepositional phrases. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would improve the overall accuracy.
