IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Table and Pie charts compare the numbers and reviews of tourists, a year before and after renovation of Ashdown Museum.

We can see an increase in no of individuals who visited the Museum after its renovation. At the same time there is drop in the visitors who were very satisfied earlier.

There is a dramatic increase in tourists with a remark of satisfied from 15% to 35% after inauguration. And the same climb can also be seen with the visitors with a review of dissatisfied from 15% to 40% after renovation. A huge drop can be seen in satisfied visitors from 40% to 30%. After the refurbishment there was 5% increase in individuals who visited it and was very dissatisfied. However there is no change with the percentage of visitors who did not respond to survey. After decrease in overall satisfaction level of visitors there was still an increment in visitors after refurbishment of almost 12,000 visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the visitor numbers and the shifts in satisfaction levels. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you correctly identify the increase in visitor numbers and the changes in satisfaction categories, the reporting of the data is occasionally confusing. For example, stating there was a 'huge drop' in satisfied visitors from 40% to 30% is accurate, but the overall summary lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the trends. The data points are presented in a list-like fashion rather than being synthesised into a clear comparison. To improve, ensure you group related data points more logically to highlight the contrast between the two years more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is coherent, but the paragraphing is non-existent, which hinders the logical flow. The text is presented as a single block, making it difficult for the reader to distinguish between the overview of visitor numbers and the detailed breakdown of satisfaction levels. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'At the same time' and 'However', the transitions between sentences feel somewhat mechanical. To achieve a higher band, you should structure your report into clear paragraphs: an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and specific details. This would help in organising your ideas more effectively and improving the overall progression of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic terms like 'increase', 'drop', and 'change'. While these are accurate, using more sophisticated synonyms would enhance the quality of your writing. There are also some minor issues with word choice, such as 'remark of satisfied' instead of 'rating of satisfied' or 'category of satisfied'. Additionally, the phrase 'inauguration' is used incorrectly here, as it refers to the opening ceremony rather than the refurbishment process itself. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise descriptors for trends and data will help you demonstrate a higher level of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'no of individuals' should be 'number of individuals', and 'was very dissatisfied' lacks a subject in the context of the sentence. There are also issues with article usage, such as 'after renovation' instead of 'after the renovation'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve the accuracy of your writing significantly.
