IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The supplied data set compares the number of tourists to Ashdown Museum and the extent of their satisfaction in the year before to the year after its refurbishment.

Overall, it is immediately apparent that the total number of visitor were increased after reconstruction and their satisfaction rates also rose.

During the year before refurbishment exactly 74000 people visited the museum and 15% were very satisfied by their visit while 10% were very dissatisfied. The individuals who were satisfied were well over a quarter but the dissatisfied people were 40% and 5% of the visitor did not survey.

On the contrary, the year after the museum's reconstruction the total number of tourists had risen to 92000. The very satisfied individuals were about one-third in ratio whilst the very dissatisfied visitors fraction reduced to 5% and the dissatisfied to 15%. Finally, the satisfied individuals were 40% and the rates of no response plateaued.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task, including the visitor numbers and the satisfaction survey data for both years. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the increase in total visitors and the shift in satisfaction levels. However, the analysis is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical. For instance, you list the percentages for each category without fully synthesising the trends. To reach a higher band, ensure you make more direct comparisons between the two periods, such as highlighting the significant drop in 'very dissatisfied' visitors alongside the rise in 'very satisfied' ones, rather than just listing the figures for each year separately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'During the year before', and 'On the contrary' helps guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring the overview is clearly separated from the specific data points. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences in the second body paragraph is a bit disjointed due to the list-like presentation of the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'refurbishment', 'reconstruction', 'plateaued', and 'satisfaction rates'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'in ratio' is not used correctly in this context, and 'the rates of no response plateaued' is slightly awkward. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that hinder the flow, such as 'the total number of visitor were increased' (should be 'visitors increased') and '5% of the visitor did not survey' (should be 'visitors did not respond'). Additionally, 'the very dissatisfied visitors fraction reduced' is grammatically awkward. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more natural phrasing will significantly improve your accuracy.
