IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table displays how many people visited Ashdown Museum in the year prior to and in the year after it was refurbished, while pie charts illustrate the responses to the surveys of visitor satisfaction during the two same years.
Overall, visitor numbers and satisfaction both increased following the refurbishment.
There were 74,000 people visiting the museum in the year before it was refurbished, and this number climbed significantly to 92,000 in the year after the refurbishment.
Moving on to visitor satisfaction, those who rated their experience as 'dissatisfied' made up the greatest proportion of respondents in the year before the museum was refurbished, at 40%. However, this number showed a dramatic decline to only 15% after the refurbishment. The proportion of respondents who were very dissatisfied with their visit also fell, to only 5%. The proportions of those who responded 'satisfied' and 'very satisfied', in comparison, both went up in the year after the refurbishment, to 40% and 35% respectively, and these were the two most common responses that year. While the people who gave no response remained same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends and successfully selected and reported the main features from both the table and the pie charts. The comparison between the two years is well-integrated, and the data is used accurately to support your points. You have successfully identified the key shifts in visitor numbers and the significant changes in satisfaction levels, such as the decline in 'dissatisfied' ratings and the rise in 'satisfied' and 'very satisfied' categories. The response is well-focused and meets the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from visitor numbers to satisfaction levels. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moving on to,' 'However,' and 'in comparison' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. While the final sentence, 'While the people who gave no response remained same,' is a sentence fragment and lacks a main clause, the overall structure remains coherent and easy to follow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'climbed significantly,' 'dramatic decline,' and 'greatest proportion' are used effectively to describe the data. There is an awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. However, there are minor issues with word choice and grammar, such as 'remained same' (should be 'remained the same'). While the vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear communication, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or varied reporting verbs would help elevate the score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate good control over basic grammar, and most sentences are error-free. There are a few minor slips, such as the fragment 'While the people who gave no response remained same,' which lacks a complete thought and a definite article. Additionally, 'the two same years' is slightly awkward; 'the same two years' would be more natural. Despite these occasional errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and the range of structures is sufficient for the task.
