Student answer (Band 5.5)
The table present the figure of tourists to Ashdown museum about the year before and the year after it was reconstructed. The chart illustrates the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their tour of Museum, during the same two years.
Overall, it can be seen that there was a considerable increase in the total number of visitors to the Ashdown Museum after its refurbishment. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of both the table and the charts. You successfully highlight the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. However, the data presentation is slightly problematic. You refer to the satisfaction figures as a 'ratio' and list them as raw numbers (e.g., '40 dissatisfied'), whereas the charts clearly represent percentages. This inaccuracy in interpreting the data affects the precision of your summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that data labels (percentages vs. raw numbers) are correctly identified and that comparisons are more clearly linked to the specific categories provided in the visual aids.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the general trend to specific data points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Similarly', and 'however' to link your ideas. However, the cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and the referencing is sometimes imprecise, such as in the final sentence where 'that were' is used awkwardly to refer back to the satisfaction figures. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would enhance the flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'refurbishment', 'considerable increase', and 'significant difference'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'the figure of tourists' is less natural than 'the number of visitors', and 'satisfaction ratio' is used incorrectly to describe percentage data. Additionally, there is some repetition of the word 'figure' and 'refurbishment'. To improve, try to use a wider variety of synonyms for 'increase' (e.g., 'rose', 'climbed') and ensure that technical terms like 'percentage' are used correctly when describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'The table present' should be 'The table presents', and 'the figure of total visitor' should be 'the total number of visitors'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'The satisfaction ratio of visitors were'. These errors occur frequently but do not impede overall communication. To achieve a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as well as attempting more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
